Protester subpoenas top Bush officials for upcoming trial
http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/news/local/7199707.htm

COLUMBIA, S.C. - A man charged with entering a restricted area during a presidential visit more than a year ago has requested U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft and Bush political adviser Karl Rove to appear at his trial later this month.

Activist Brett Bursey said Thursday he wants those officials and others to appear at his trial, scheduled for Nov. 12. Bursey said the testimony will show that the Bush administration tries to "sanitize" areas of dissent around the president during visits.

A phone message left with assistant U.S. Attorney John Barton, who is handling the case, was not immediately returned. But Bursey and his lawyer say they expect the administration to fight the subpoenas.

Bursey, 55, originally was charged with trespassing by local police when he refused to move to a "free-speech zone." That charge was dropped, but federal charges were filed about five months after Bush's October 2002 visit.

"We intend to find out from Mr. Ashcroft why and how the decision to prosecute Mr. Bursey was reached," Bursey's attorney Lewis Pitts said.

GO BRETT!!!!!!

3. A case with a lot of texture, for sure
He was arrested for demonstrating against Nixon, sued, and won! (Of course, he wasn't up against John Ashcroft, and Bush.

State Sen. Phil Leventis, D-Sumter and retired brigadier general in the U.S. Air Force, has volunteered to fly the Washington officials to Columbia in his seven-seat Cessna 421.

Leventis, who fought in the Gulf War and doesn't support the current war in Iraq, said Bursey's case is straightforward. "Brett called me and told me what he needed and I was happy to oblige," Leventis said.

This should be interesting.

4. This is going to be VERY interesting....
Why, in this era of the "War on Terra", is our Justice department now prosecuting "trespassers"?

These repukes really do not know when to quit. It's actually very funny to watch them overstep. But it's getting less funny because whereas they used to get called on their bullshit by the media, it doesn't happen anymore.

6. A True American Patriot, that man!
:toast: :toast:

But the Imperial Thugs of Emperor Bunnypants* should not be expected to show.

Who is gonna make them?

NOTE: This is the ONLY operative question (along with it's variant "who can stop them?") that Totalitarian swine like Bush find worth asking.

20. Contacting Brett
If you would like to contact Brett and offer your support(emotional and/or financial), you can reach him thru his website at

http://www.scpronet.com/

This is the site of the SC Progressive Network which is an organization founded by Bursey. It consists of many different progressive groups in the state of SC.

Do any of you have an organization like this one in your state?

At this website, you can also read more about his trial and keep up with what is going when it resumes next week.

I started a thread on this same article. It was locked as a dupe, but not before much information was posted. If you would like to read this thread, go to the following URL:

8. I thought the constitution said the U.S. WAS a "free speech zone."
Since when is free speech confined to a restricted area?

21. It actually came from abortion rights groups
It was ruled that anti-abortion protesters could not intimidate people coming and going from a family planning clinic and had to maintain a certain distance,(a zone of privacy) From that they made a convoluted version of that ruling.

that the "First Amendment Zones" have been used so extensively by the same sniveling little sociopath who today presumed to lecture other countries about bring democracy to the Middle East.

13. Bush is a walking talking contradiction
Remember the infamous "there ought to be some limitations to freedom?" (context was free speech).

Make up your mind numbnuts: do you love it or do you think it's excessive and needs to be limited?
