FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Two South Florida teens suspected in the beatings of three homeless men turned themselves in to police Sunday, authorities said.

Family attorneys negotiated the surrender of Brian Hooks, 18, and Thomas S. Daugherty, 17.

They will face murder charges in the death of Norris Gaynor and aggravated battery charges in the videotaped beating of Jacques Pierre, said Capt. Michael Gregory of the Fort Lauderdale police.

They also are suspects in the beating of a third man, Raymond Perez, 49, whose case remains under investigation, Gregory said.

6. i always wonder about this too
if it really is happening more often. or if it's just the 24 hour instant news we can now get.

but one thing i'm pretty sure about is that there are nations where these violent crimes are much rare, especially "modern" wealthy nations. and ours seems to be an exception.

There's nothing anyone could have done to change them. Parents are responsible for many things, but not everything. I can't blame Dahmer's parents for what he did, for example.

And I do blame Dahmer's parents. I was listening to Dahmer's dad once and he was talking about the kid torturing some animals. CLUE!!!! Did he get the kid in therapy or giggle when the kid was doing it. The dad was most likely a sociopath himself but oif course not as severe as the son turned out

8. Fla. Teens Surrender in Homeless Beatings
DENISE KALETTE
Associated Press Writer

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.

Two South Florida teens suspected in the beatings of three homeless men turned themselves in to police Sunday, authorities said.

The teens were in police custody pending official charges from a grand jury, Gregory said. Police also were investigating whether the two may have been involved in other beatings and if they had accomplices.

"We do know there have been other assaults of homeless in Fort Lauderdale," Gregory said.

Names of the teens' attorneys were not immediately available.

13. Police identify two suspects in homeless beatings
Edited on Sun Jan-15-06 11:50 PM by IanDB1
<snip>

Police searched the teens' Plantation Isles homes Saturday evening and an investigator left Hooks' home with a baseball bat.

<snip>

Fellow students described Hooks as an avid fisherman and boater who graduated last year. Last year, he was captain of the South Plantation Paladins inline hockey team.

Daugherty recently dropped out of Plantation High School and joined a vocational program, according to students who know him.

<snip>

Police also monitored a racing Web site message board that has several postings about the beatings. One person mentioned Daugherty's name in connection with the attacks within 24 hours of the FAU incident.

Most of the people posting on a thread about the beating denounced the attacks. One poster who said he played hockey with one of the teens said the two claimed they were going camping the day of the beatings and hadn't been seen since.

37. Placing value on life
You have determined these boys' lives have no value. They grew up in a culture that granted society permission to judge the value of any given life, and generally places no value on the lives of the poor, particularly the homeless. So there you go, the boys just lived what they learned.

38. Please.
Blaming society for their actions is ludicrous. They are old enough to know that beating someone to death is wrong. You only do this type of shit if you are evil or batshit crazy and in either case the death penalty is appropriate. To even attempt to pass this off as the fault of society for devaluing the homeless is just silly. These dudes are punk mean assholes who knew exactly what they were doing.

39. I'm taking the middle ground...
... societal influence HELPED to create these monsters. Look at our culture. Look at our movies, our TV, our politics, look at the messages.

The ultimate responsibility for our actions lie with ourselves, I agree with that. But the reason you see a lot more of this kind of thing in America than you do in similar "first world" countries is that as a nation our humanity is off the tracks.

People like these homeless folks are considered "losers" and they are not really human. People in this country just don't have the wisdom to see that they could wind up just like them as a result of just one bit of bad luck. The ultimate irony is that these kids' lives are over - and it wasn't bad luck that ruined their lives, it was willful actions. They are bigger losers than the men they attacked.

And there is one political party that has spread the meme of "losers" in order to save a few bucks for the rich. Yes, they have some personal responsibility to deal with too.

41. I personally think the point is a good one. Thanks largely to the....
...collective efforts of our Federal, state and local governments, the U. S. no longer has any system of safety nets designed to take care of those that are unlucky enough to be elderly, and/or poor, and/or homeless. The wealthy Top One-Percenters will claim that "those people" are at fault for being in one or more of those situations because of their belief that "those people" didn't want to work hard to become rich. These people are actually victims of a very sly government-sanctioned purging, not unlike the pseudo-science known as eugenics.

The wealthy Top One-Percenters conveniently forget that the majority of folks in that exclusive category inherited most, if not all, of their money. Unfortunately, Congress and the NeoCon Executive Branch are populated by Top One-Percenters who don't have the first clue about how a very large number of U. S. Citizens now live close to the financial brink.

Yes, the "punk assholes" knew what they were doing, but they're not the reason "those people" had become homeless, are they?

48. Excellent point. This sort of behavior whether at home or in Iraq...
expresses the same savagery -- the savagery inherent in capitalism. Precisely because the runaway greed rationalized by capitalism creates a hierarchy of human value in which those on the bottom are scorned and hated, it's no coincidence that capitalism so quickly morphs into fascism wherein the scorned and hated are victimized by deliberately genocidal policy and even murdered for fun and profit.

After all, fascism is merely the application of the tyrannies of corporate management to politics and governance -- including the notion of "open season" on the losers.

It's no accident that (though there has always been murderous poor-bashing in the United States -- much more than is commonly reported) such episodes have increased radically under Bush. To his followers Bush is a modern-day American version of der Führer -- especially to his Christian storm troopers. Bush and his cronies have deliberately fanned the flames of class hatred, race hatred and hatred of sexual minorities: remember for example how Reagan/Bush official William Bennett said the way to reduce crime is to reduce black births? Incidents such as the torture deaths of these homeless men or the torture death of Matthew Shepard are rapidly escalating as a result, something even Bush's Federal Bureau of Investigation admits.

If these boys are guilty as charged, they are serial murderers no different from Ted Bundy and should be put to death accordingly.

Alas and in all probability -- especially if it is true they come from wealthy families -- they will probably be given probation and turned loose, where they will be absorbed by the corporate world, and their murderous instincts applied to the slaughter that is euphemistically labeled "growth" and "profit."

and

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x139524

36. Those homeless men, found sleeping on the ground must put up a fierce
fight, don't you think? The guys are some kind of heroes. They remind me of that excellent Young Republican who didn't know he was being taped at the Republican National Convention when he gallantly stepped up and started kicking a female Democratic protester who had been pushed down to the floor.

You'd think these patriotic folks would decide to channel all that appetite for maiming and killing the helpless into becoming contractors and serving in Bush's neo-con adventures.

52. I worked in a homeless clinic for two years
in a fairly prominent California town. The homeless were treated like angels or devils...and they rarely fell somewhere in between. This severe dividing of the homeless community caused so much hurt and strife
within all social/economical boundaries that the real issue was kicked to the wayside. Many homeless people are suffering not only from financial hardship but addictions as well. As long as our society treats them as "lessor" people we will see this kind of terrible crime. The homeless become easy targets because they are viewed as weak or incapable of fighting back. We need to focus on healing, not just within our youth...but the homeless as well. Shame on these boys for doing such a weak and despicable thing! We should all learn from this abuse and empower those who need the help. Not just for assistance...but to stand on their own in the face of such hatred. Hopefully this means the ones who are taught to hate and the homeless who are lost in the sea of paperwork to get help. To be whole people when some in society want them to be partial souls would be beautiful on both sides.
