COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Reuters) - Former Republican President George Bush on Friday gave an award named after himself to Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy, a longtime political opponent who has accused his son, President Bush, of lying about Iraq.

Bush presented Kennedy with the George Bush Award for Excellence in Public Service during a banquet at Texas A&M University, in an exchange between two political opponents and elders of the nation's most influential political families.

The liberal Kennedy is among the most vociferous critics of the Bush administration's handling of the war in Iraq, and has accused them of lying about the presence of weapons of mass destruction.

The purpose of the award, Bush said, is to recognize public service, putting politics aside.

5. That's the thing...
it's been public knowledge since last year that daddy didn't at all like the idea of invading Iraq. Many of daddy's former honchos, including Schwartzkopf (spelling?) and Brent Scrokroft (spelling again?) came out publicly against the war. When Scrokroft came out it was reported that he was speaking for the 'ol man.

Now this.

11. That is right on the money...Junior has gone off the leash...
...and Poppy is about to apply the belt.

After all, there has to be some major reason that caused Poppy to resign from the Carlysle Group.

6. Ted should have refused it
That would send a strong message that we are serious about the damage
that the rethugs are doing to our country. No more compromise until the
destruction of our America is stopped!

9. this is an embarrassment to w, plain and simple, and that's why we aren't
hearing much about it from the 'thugs. they just want it to go away, be forgotten, but it's kinda delightful. shows us a lot of things. reminds us that there used to be a time when the right wing wasn't filled with hate.

12. Ugh for This:
"Kennedy, for the night at least, put aside his criticism of the current president.

`I have great respect for both President Bushes. It's been a great privilege to work with both presidents,' he said."
