McCains having trouble selling mansion
http://upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?StoryID=20060126-040731-5248r

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., tests the declining real estate market as he tries to sell his recently price-reduced $3.75 million Phoenix mansion.

The 11,000 square foot estate, with its nine bedrooms and eight bathrooms -- and eight surveillance cameras -- has been on the market for three months.

Only six prospective buyers have checked it out, the Arizona Republic says. That led to a half-million-dollar price cut.

A year ago, there were 145 homes priced at $500,000 or more for sale in Phoenix. Now, there are 1,341. Houses were selling in days last year, but now, it's taking an average of six weeks.

Funny how the rest of us can get by with one-tenth the square footage . . .

Where did he get all his money anyway?

30. He did some stumping for Chimpy in 2004. The "per diem" for his
services was likely a handsome "booty".

4. It is obscene that a man who has spent most of the recent
years of his life in public service owns a house that he values at over 3 million.

18. His wife was heir to a huge fortune, I believe. So, that's why she grew
up in such a large house. It's a neat house and grounds. The house was featured in a piece on him when he was running for President. Her taste was very downscale...country. She also had a doll and quilt collection, if I remember correctly. He seemed like a creep but she seemed very nice and normal.

8. What? No lobbyists around to buy it for twice the value??
What was McCain's career before he became a senator, anyway? I mean, even before he became a senator and became one of the Keating Five.

Doesn't ANYONE ever notice how these bastards go into the senate or the house, say, moderately wealthy, and come out filthy rich?? Doesn't ANYONE ever wonder how that happens?? Their house or senate salaries are below $200,000/year!

Okay, sure, some of them COME from great wealth. But not ALL of them! And even the ones who come from great wealth just get richer and richer and richer, the longer they stay in the senate... how do they do that, earning only between $100,000 and $200,000 per year?

Gee, I just can't figure it out!

Hard to get over the emotions that just keep welling up inside when I hear that John McCain can't get $3.75 million for his house.

Tragic. Truly tragic.

Don't complain to me about your (obscenely expensive) house not selling until you've walked a little while in middle America's shoes. I've had to live apart from my husband for 6 damn months now, and we're financially strapped from paying both a mortgage payment and apartment rent for 6 months now because my husband had to move for his job and our (normal size and price range) house still hasn't sold. Yeah, the * economy is just hunky dory. No real estate bubble, my ass!

22. Make an orphanage or something out of it.
Arizona has incredible Native American artifacts, too. How about a museum dedicated to the Native American?

Great tax writeoff, Mr. and Mrs. McCain.

Irrespective of it being her family home, the idea that someone needs 11,000 square feet just strikes me as somewhat obscene. But then again, I've always preferred the small cozy homes so I don't feel compelled to acquire things just to fill up empty space. :)

It was built in 1951. How old is this wife?

I wouldn't pay $4 million for it, it is rather, shall I say "ugly."

32. Extremely large homes ALWAYS take forever to sell.
Why is this news? As someone with tons of experience in the real estate biz, I can tell you that an 11k sq. ft. house does NOT sell in days, regardless of the area or market. They always sit longer... and winter, and oil prices, and the mortgage rates don't help. He'll sell it when it gets closer to springtime. In the meantime, it's total bullshit for a public servant to own an 11,000 square foot house.. I believe I've seen the house in Architectural Digest, it's a nice house, not very grand for the size.
