BREAKING: Pryor will vote 'no' on Alito
U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor will vote against the confirmation of Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Pryor said he was satisfied that Alito was qualified and possessed the proper judicial temperament. But there’s a third criterion, he said. “Can he be fair and impartial if he’s on the United States Supreme Court? And would he be an activist, would he legislate from the bench, would he come with an agenda? I spent a lot of time looking at that. I must say when it comes to the question of whether Samuel Alito will be fair and impartial, I have doubts, I have reservations.” So he said, while it was a close call, he would vote no.

He added, without prompting, that he did not support a filibuster against Alito because “one is not warranted.” As a member of the bipartisan Gang of 14 that earlier had preserved filibuster as a potential option in case of “extraordinary circumstances,” he said that clearly wasn't the case with Alito.

1. I must be dense. Just what the hell *are* extraordinary circumstances?
A felony record involving homicide?

3. Correct your subject line, please
This isn't voting no on Alito, it's voting, "Yes, but I'm chicken shit."

4. I called his office a while ago
and told the person answering that he might as well vote yes if he can't support a filibuster. I also said I had supported a Pryor - David or Mark - whenever they ran, both with money and effort, but would do so no more after this vote.

6. Rubber stamps don't need brains
In the case of Alito, brains are just window dressing. This is a judge who will take you back to 1906. That might be okay for you, unless you were one of the laborers for the expanding leisure class, the laborers who worked 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, with little to not rights or protections at all. Remember learning about tenements in high school? Welcome to 1906 for the majority of Americans.

8. Its not just his views on abortion. Its his views of the unitary executive
theory, his seeming disregard for minority rights and his willingness to side with big business over the "little guy". He is a RW ideologue who would take the place of a moderate who was a crucial swing vote on many important issues. A filibuster is a pretty appropriate response.

10. WTF? Miers was just as "qualified" for the position as Alito is
Go read your constitution, and you'll see the qualifications are spelled out quite clearly: NONE WHATSOEVER.

Yes, that's right, bush can nominate anyone he damn well pleases to the SCOTUS, and then it's up to the senate to advise and consent as they see fit.

I'm 100% certain that Miers would have been every bit as capable of concurring with Scalia and coming up with her own pro-corporate anti-freedom opinions as Alito will be -- the only difference is that Miers' career record isn't as openly deceitful and repulsive as Alito's. Alito merits a filibuster just as much as Miers would have, and Roberts did (but didn't receive). Sorry lp, your post just doesn't hold water.
