CNN: Another body swells Katrina death toll
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/01/27/katrina.body/index.html?section=cnn_latest

Two FEMA temporary workers arrested on fraud, bribery charges

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- With the final death toll yet to be tallied, the body of another Hurricane Katrina victim was found Friday east of New Orleans and taken to a medical examiner's office, an official said.

Make Louisiana's running total 1,104.

No information was available on who found the body under the debris of a home in storm-ravaged St. Bernard Parish, but Dr. Louis Cataldie, the state's medical examiner, recently asked that recovery crews and their cadaver dogs resume the search for bodies.

"The number of human remains that I have doesn't match the number of missing, which means there are either human remains that have either been washed away or are still out there waiting to be discovered," Cataldie said.

In other news Friday, the FBI announced that two temporary employees of the Federal Emergency Management Agency were arrested after soliciting bribes from a contractor supplying food for displaced residents.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Can we at least bury the dead?

15. They disgrace was calling off the search prematurely
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 02:57 PM by RazzleDazzle
which is exactly what they did, no doubt so they could limit the numbers they were responsible for. AND the media attention on the numbers, of course.

3. I'm guessing the real death toll is probably twice that
and I'm sure it will come out in due course too...

in some academic journal that nobody reads.

5. I think it may be at least twice the official toll
Remember that no cameras were allowed in as FEMA rounded up the bodies (sort of). Of course, we'll never get an independent investigation into this, so I guess those 3,000 + Americans will just remain "missing" all that time.

6. I wonder what ever happened to the 2,000 missing postal workers?
Never did hear another word about that did you? I think that the death toll from Katrina was probably closer to 10,000 persons myself. That Louisiana Bayou ... 'tis said by the oldsters from Shreveport that I know that once you went into that Bayou, you never came out. Nice dumping ground for bodies it has been for many years and that is nothing new. :(

7. The Feds are acting like China did when they hid SARS #s from the world
I know they're forcibly holding down the death toll & they'll fight the release of the numbers like Cheney fought the release of his energy meetings(successfully, unfortunately), just like they 'decline' to answer the people's questions when asked through their reps, i.e. Senators, House Representatives.

8. The true death toll is probably something around 5,000
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 10:03 PM by Gman
Of course the biggest job for the White House during Katrina was suppressing the death toll. They weren't going to let information out that tied the Bush administration to over 8,000 killed on his watch in domestic disasters.

Add 2200+ dead US troops in Iraq and the known Bush American death toll is over 10,000. Let me say that again.

The known Bush American death toll is over 10,000.

And we still have 3 more years of this shit.

9. I don't think we'll ever truly know the number of dead
from the Katrina disaster. When you think that some of the dead were very young children - small and light weight and easily carried out to the Gulf of Mexico to disappear without a trace. There is so much blood on the hands of this administration.

10. The magic number is somewhere around 3,000
Can't let it be worse than 9/11. Nope, wouldn't be prudent. (oops, wrong Bush*).

volunteering at a relief center, they told us that a body had been discovered in that area just the week before.

12. See also the jump in death toll numbers reported from news media
in this 1-25-06 blog entry:
http://robertlindsay.blogspot.com/2006/01/katrina-death-toll-rockets-to-1417.html

In that post the "latest counts" are given as:
Louisiana: Tue., January 24: 1,101
Mississippi: Tue., January 24: 238
Florida : Mon., January 9: 14
Georgia : Mon., January 9: 2
Alabama: Mon., January 9: 2
Ohio : Fri., September 23: 2
Kentucky : Fri., September 23: 1
Evacuees *: Tue., October 4: 57

This documents the jump in the numbers. The CNN report in the opening post of the current thread raises the Louisiana "official" death toll by 3 more.

13. Gee, I can't imagine why they want to bulldoze the 9th ward
...besides taking away the property of the poor who may be considering returning.

16. And jeez, but couldn't they have worded that headline a bit better!
Considering the body's been there for almost 5 months?

May Bush and his cohorts burn in hell for what they have done.

My sympathies to the family of the deceased. I do hope they find all those who died so that their families can get proper graves to go to, at least.
