Washington - Even in the nation's capital, it was a rare sight: former President Gerald R. Ford lunching on seared sea bass with the Washington Post's Bob Woodward.
Woodward, now an assistant managing editor at the Post, recalled how he was alerted to the monumental decision (Nixon pardon). It was a Sunday morning and he was sleeping in. His phone rang. It was Bernstein, blurting out, "Have you heard what happened? The (S.O.B.) pardoned the (S.O.B.)."
Woodward, who recounted the conversation without resorting to abbreviations, turned to Ford, saying, "Mr. President, I apologize for Carl Bernstein's language. I never could control him."
Woodward said he thought the pardon the wrong thing to do, but 25 years later, after long sit-downs with Ford and an examination of old White House documents, he had an epiphany. From Woodward: "I had it wrong. (The pardon) was the right thing to do. . . . He had to get Nixon off the national agenda."
