Rumsfeld Gains Latitude On Rules for Civilian Workers
Rumsfeld Gains Latitude On Rules for Civilian Workers

By Christopher Lee
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, November 8, 2003; Page A03

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld won authority from the House yesterday to overhaul work rules governing the department's 746,000 civilian employees. Rumsfeld says the move is necessary to fight terrorism, but unions and many Democrats decry it as a crushing blow to long-standing civil service protections.

1. Everything twisted into terrorism and national security reasons
To paraphrase an old anti-littering commercial: It's enough to make us sick. Isn't it enough to make them stop?

2. Good article...gotta love this part
Sen. Susan M. Collins (R-Maine), chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, said the final product could have been worse. Collins said she worked hard to preserve avenues for independent reviews and require consultations with unions.

"It's a pretty good compromise," she said. "The final version is a very long ways from where the Department of Defense started out."

This guy summed it up pretty well:

"This measure was passed in the name of homeland security but instead will only serve to pave the way for a patronage system where hard work and merit are not rewarded but political loyalty is paramount," said John Gage, president of the American Federation of Government Employees.

I'm not liking the sound of this part either:

Pentagon officials say the measure will enable them to reassign as many as 320,000 military members to jobs that are more directly tied to war-fighting and national security, leaving the tasks they had been doing to civil servants or private contractors, or eliminating the positions.

3. Patronage civil servant jobs.
They tear down so they can build back up with their loyal cronies in place.

5. Private contractors will only cost them more money and put
our nation at risk for security breaches.

Here is yet another way to bloat the coffers of the Bush donors...

6. Perhaps Rummies idea of New Deal 2?
Privatize, put those corporations to work so they can make billions more, working the middle-class to death with their mantra of "More with Less"

9. The WP is behind on this.....Asia Times Online
reported on this a few days ago and it's in the current World Media Watch.

The author of the article is a prof from U of Ca and writes for Foreign Policy in Focus.
Another one usually way ahead of the game is Jim Lobe who writes for both FPIP and Inter Press Service.

I'm on my mother's webtv now, so I can't post links, but you'll find both via Google and the link to the article on Rummy wanting to privatize over 700,000 jobs in the WMW, link in my sig.
