Chemical Plant explosion in Morganton, NC. No details, other than a nearby witness described a "mushroom cloud."

I used to visit that place as a kid and there was this lady who'd cuss to herself and I thought she was scary. Now I cuss aloud to myself. Especially when I burn myself on the friggin' stove.

49. It Was Partly Responsible for
my NOT going into clinical psychology. The patients were shocking. Many of them were senile or retarded. I met with a schizophrenic about my age every week (we were supposed to track one patient), and he became progressively more delusional. I got access to patient drug records for a term paper, and the number elements of the average drug cocktail was amazing.

51. Later on I was told that there were murder cover-ups and such
that took place during the late 1960s by the very person I would visit. Not crazy either. Shock treatment, loads of pills...plus a lot of hokey pokey between the doctors and staff. But the grounds were very lovely.

MorganTOWN is in Alamance County - - a small town just north of Burlington, about equidistant from Greensboro and Durham off of I-40. MorganTON is bigger and about 100-120 miles to the west.

Sixteen Injured in North Carolina Chemical Plant Explosion; Residents Urged to Stay Inside
The Associated Press

Jan 31, 2006 — MORGANTON, N.C. An explosion at a chemical plant Tuesday injured at least 16 workers and set off an intense blaze spewing thick, black smoke that forced nearby residents indoors while crews tried to determine what chemicals might be in the air.

Two victims were airlifted to different hospitals after the 11:30 a.m. explosion at the Synthron Inc. plant, a hospital spokesman said. One was in serious condition and the other's condition was not released.

Fourteen people, none with life-threatening injuries, were being treated at another facility, officials said.

Firefighters were on the scene and police urged residents to stay inside. Authorities called residents near the plant to tell them to close their windows and turn off their ventilation and heating systems while hazardous materials crews figure out what chemicals were involved in the blast, said Lisa Propst, a communications manager for Burke County emergency services.

And shut up doors, windows, etc.

In Texas, chemical plants are secretive about which chemicals they actually manufacture. This is supposedly for "Security." Big plants usually have their own HazMat teams. But explosions or leaks at smaller places can be real problems. Sometimes it takes a while to find out what the City (or County) HazMat should do. Quench a fire immediately? Let it burn out? Run away? Tell the people to stay inside until the all-clear? Tell them to stay inside until the ambulances arrive? Tell them not to light a match, whatever they do?

Expensive homes are NOT built near petrochemical plants.
