What Tony Blair knows - but will not share with his allies - about Iraq's attempts to procure uranium in Africa became entangled yesterday in a mounting US controversy over claims that the White House misled the American people.

The prime minister flew into Washington yesterday facing demands from US Democrats to reveal all that lay behind the 16 words that the White House now admits should not have been included in President George W. Bush's State of the Union address in January: "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."

"Welcome, Tony Blair, to the People's House. We need you," Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, said on the House floor just hours before Mr Blair was to deliver his own remarks to a joint session of Congress.

Referring to Mr Blair's earlier insistence that he stood by the uranium allegation, Mr Markey went on: "Our own CIA doesn't know what you know. Our National Security Council says it doesn't know what you know. Indeed the president of the United States says he doesn't know what you know. The American public needs to know the truth. You hold the key."
