Book excepts: Lynch struggled with Iraqi doctors who wanted to amputate her leg

Saturday, November 8, 2003

(11-08) 14:34 PST NEW YORK (AP) --

Former prisoner of war Pfc. Jessica Lynch screamed and struggled with Iraqi doctors trying to anesthetize her after one of them said they were going to amputate her leg, according to newly released excepts from her soon-to-be-released authorized biography.

The surgery never took place, and Lynch later heard that it was planned so she could be taken more easily to Baghdad, "probably for a propaganda video," according to excerpts of "I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story" being published Monday in Time magazine. The book will be released Tuesday.

The excepts also say hospital workers wanted U.S. forces to find her in the days before her April 1 rescue, and even moved her bed within sight of an American soldier a doctor had spotted on a nearby rooftop.

Previously released excerpts of the book, written by former New York Times reporter Rick Bragg, said medical reports indicate Lynch was raped in the hours after her 507th Maintenance Company convoy was attacked March 23, although she has no memory of the assault. (snip/...)

1. Boy!
This is sounding more like a snow job every day. Did Rummy dictate passages for the book, while sucking Absinthe from the bottle?

3. When will they start identifying Bragg as having been FIRED from the NY
Edited on Sat Nov-08-03 06:10 PM by joeybee12
Times for plagarism--nice to know he's still inventing things.

He makes me sick.

If Jessica doesn't remmeber anything, how does she remember that they wanted to amputate her leg?

This books stinks to high heaven of Fascist propoganda--this is a sad day in America.

6. slate.com on Rick Bragg

The suspended New York Times reporter insists—wrongly—that everybody does it.
By Jack Shafer
Posted Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at 4:27 PM PT

On Friday, New York Times reporter Rick Bragg insisted to the Columbia Journalism Review he'd done nothing wrong in claiming 1) the byline for a story that an unpaid free-lancer had reported for him and 2) the dateline "Apalachicola, Fla.," after visiting the town only briefly. (See "Rick Bragg's 'Dateline Toe-Touch.' ")

"I wouldn't have done anything different," Bragg tells CJR.

Bragg reiterates that position to the Washington Post's Howard Kurtz again today—as he pre-announces his resignation from the New York Times. He tells Kurtz:

I have dictated stories from an airport after writing the story out in longhand on the plane that I got from phone interviews and then was applauded by editors for "working magic." … Those things are common at the paper. Most national correspondents will tell you they rely on stringers and researchers and interns and clerks and news assistants.

Bragg continues his defense, saying Times stringers and interns "should get more credit for what they do," but in "taking feeds" from such assistants, "I have never even thought of whether or not that is proper. Maybe there is something missing in me. ..."

I will take it from a stringer. I will take it from an intern. I will take it from a news assistant. If a clerk does an interview for me, I will use it. I'm going to send people to sit in for me if I don't have time to be there. It is not unusual to send someone to conduct an interview you don't have time to conduct. It's what we do.

9. The book should not be released
by the publishers. Past time reputable publishing houses should be more responsible in selecting what to publish. Too many lies are being perpetrated just to make a buck and plus the difficulty of bringing libel suits against the liars out to destroy lives and reputations.

11. He forgot to add
He forgot to add that she was able to escape when an orderly tried to kiss her. That's right, she bit his tongue out and ambushed the next orderly to walk into the door. After banging his head in the door to get the whereabouts of Saddam Hussein, she escaped in the Pussy Wagon after willing her toes to move.

I don't know the rest of the Jessica Lynch story goes..but I bet it involves a samurai sword and a showdown with Chemical Ali at the battle of the Blue Leaves.

17. "Then the doctors tried to remove her tongue, but the brave soldier...
...fought back by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, as well as the Lord's Prayer. At first, she spoke quietly, as she had done as a child in a little one-room brick school house in the great state of West Virginia. But then louder. And louder still, her proud voice echoing throughout the cold Iraqi medical-prison which stank of decades of inhuman barbarism and the failure of the preceding Democratic administration to liberate the people of Iraq from their wicked captor.

The Saddam Hussein-approved Tongue Clipper fell from the lead physician's hand, clattering to the floor.

Like vampires confronted with crosses he and the other evil doctors shrank back, repelled by her powerful incantatory message of justice, liberty, God, free markets, low gas prices, reductions in the capital gains tax, and a minimum of 70 copies of the latest Tom Hanks war movie on the shelf at every Blockbuster.

'You can't amputate my limbs, cut off my tongue, force me to wear a veil, or get me to renounce the Lord in favor of your inferior 98-lb. weakling God,' she cried, rising from the operating table and deftly seizing a guard's weapon.

Truly an army of one at that moment, the plucky West Virginian private trained the rifle upon the malevolent physicians. Hobbling bravely on her broken legs, she made for the door as the guns of her rescuers could be heard chattering their message of freedom in the yard outside. One by one, the defeated Iraqis hung their heads in shame and prayed for Allah to help them.

'George W. Bush doesn't like it when you take advantage of your liberators!" declared brave Jessica, never prouder than at that moment to be an American soldier. "I could take all of you out right now, which is just what you filthy evildoers deserve, but that would be too easy. Instead, I'm taking you back to face justice - at a little center of freedom we like to call Guantanamo Bay!'"

etc. etc.
