Democrat Eyes Potential Grounds for Bush Impeachment
Democrat Eyes Potential Grounds for Bush Impeachment
Thu July 17, 2003 07:51 PM ET

By John Milne
CONCORD, N.H. (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bob Graham said on Thursday there were grounds to impeach President Bush if he was found to have led America to war under false pretenses.

While Graham did not call for Bush's impeachment, he said if the president lied about the reasons for going to war with Iraq it would be "more serious" than former President Bill Clinton's lie under oath about his sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky.

"If in fact we went to war under false pretenses that is a very serious charge," Graham, the senior U.S. senator from Florida, told reporters in New Hampshire.

"If the standard of impeachment is the one the House Republicans used against Bill Clinton, this clearly comes within that standard," he said.

Democrats and some Republicans have raised questions about the unsubstantiated claim Bush made in his January State of the Union speech that Iraq was seeking uranium from Africa in its pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. (snip/...)

1. Waste of Time
Gee, let's see how this would work:

Democrats: Mr. Chairman, we should have impeachment hearings for George W. Bush.

Chairman Sensenbrenner: No.

THE END

2. And that would be the end for Sensenbrenner
When the repubs lost over 50% of their current seats in both houses.

No, with 2004 coming up, and the unstaunchable flow of blood from Iraq, and lies from the White House the republicans who were not signed on to the PNAC profit sharing plan will gladly walk into the oval office bearing a cheerful bill of impeachment about the size of a russian novel.

4. the idea that it's a "waste of time" shouldn't stop anybody
. . . we the American people MUST rise up against this scourge, whether or not there appears to be "Repuglican support." To do otherwise would be to surrender like a bunch of candy-ass wimps. Forget such pessimism and join the outcry, without letup.

5. It won't be that easy to dismiss.
Especualy if the Democrats start dumping evdince against Bush on the speaker's podeum. They then come back the next day, drop the latest news reports on the modeum, and say, can we investigate him for these crimes.

Soner or later, he has to say yes, or step down himself. You can only protect a criminal for so long, before you become afrade of being labled complicite.

This Repuce congress will crack, you just have to truly turn up the heat to unheard of levels.

But realy, what's the alternitive? Let him walk?

8. That's how it would go, but it's not a waste of time
I agree that it is unlikely that lockstep, partisan Republicans would ever vote to impeach Bush*. But to save this country, we don't just have to get rid of Bush*, we also have to get rid of at least some of his enablers in Congress. It is well worth the time to keep exposing Bush* as the liar he is, if in the process we expose the Repugs in Congress as the partisan hacks they are.

There is political value - if it's possible or not to impeach.

9. Its nice that somebody
is finally trying though. Just the idea of it being said aloud may put the idea in the heads of a lot of voters who may in turn pressure their "reps" as more and more of this regime's crimes become known.

14. Do it !
Every opportunity they get...say "Impeach Bush". People may say they like Bush or they object to Democrats calling for his impeachment. Doesn't matter. Each call for it is a strike on his reputation. Eventually, the folks that are annoyed with Dems calling for it would become annoyed with Bush. Drip, drip, drip...

3. I'm glad to hear a prez candidate talk impeachment
Graham has seen the classified "evidence" and knows it's phoney. He's not just shooting in the dark.

11. Nixon Model
First they got Agnew.

Next, a new Vice-President was appointed/approved by Senate.

Followed by much bad press for Nixon.

Then, Republican leaders told Nixon it was time to go.

No impeachment.

Nixon just left.
