Italian minister 'to wear Mohammed t-shirts'

An Italian cabinet minister from a right-wing party was today quoted as he planned to wear T-shirts bearing some of the prophet cartoons which have inflamed much of the Muslim world.

“I had some made for me and from today on I will wear some T-shirts with some of the cartoons contested by Islam,” Reforms Minister Roberto Calderoli was quoted as saying in remarks to the Italian news agency ANSA.

Calderoli is a leader of the Northern League, a regional party with an anti-immigrant stance. “I am ready to give them away to whoever asks me, as a form of pacifism,” ANSA quoted the minister as saying.

3. Theo Van Gogh on Jews
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theo_van_Gogh_%28film_director%29

Van Gogh explained a "smell of caramel" by stating that "today they're only burning diabetic Jews." When he was criticized by the Jewish historian Evelien Gans, he wrote in Folia Civitatis magazine: "I suspect that Ms. Gans gets wet dreams about being fucked by Dr Mengele."

Fascist? No. But certainly an odd choice for hero worship.

10. The Van Gogh quote
that "earned" him his murder, was an insult about Muslims being..."geitenneukers"... (goat fuckers). Also produced the film "Submission" that was a blatant insult to any believer in Islam. I am an atheistic sort, but even I was insulted at the way TvG went on about things that may be unjust, which are also "private cultural norms/family values(as you would say in the USA)" and worthy of being treated with a modicum of respect. I still remember reading the line in his opinion column and I wondered then how long before some angry insulted person would "payback". Theo van Gogh was an abrasive cabaret-ist who longed for confrontation and the spotlight. He was nice to his friends and an "echte klootzak" to all others. I once greeted him as he stepped out of a taxi near Leidseplein in Amsterdam...his response was to snear at me then walk away like a large penguin. Not a nice man. Also not worth the wasted years in jail for dropping the blowhard, eh MB? Religion is for fools and those who associate with them. RIP Theo.

5. The Northern League is like having a Neo-Confederacy party around here
or the Bloc Quebecois in Canada, only right-wing in general domestic policies. Anyway, this guy sis a douchebag, and that's all I can say about him. We don't need to further fan the flames of violence.

6. Great, just great.
I'm sending my fourteen-year-old on a student trip to Italy next summer. So thanks a lot, Calderoli, for trying to focus the insanity of religious fanatics on the country.

They are starting to come out of the wood work and their agenda is all too clear.

13. I'll tell you what's remarkable about that story
That the Swedish govt. can apparently shut down websites it doesn't like. I thought Sweden prided itself for extensive free speech legislation?

14. Quite obviously it can't - the hosting company took it down
Most hosting companies have clauses in their terms of contract disallowing such things (basically anything likely to earn a DOS attack).

As to the government asking the company to take it down - questionable indeed, but another thing entirely.

15. Another thing? Bullshit.
The site was in practice shut down by the government since they put pressure on the ISP. The ISP admin even admitted to caving to it, that in effect they had "co-operated" with the government in this decision. You're damn right it's questionable, and AFAIK, various press groups and ombudsmen have already expressed deep concern over the incident.

16. Breaking: Swedish Prime Minister takes exception with conduct of the FM
Deems conduct of the Foreign Ministry in this matter 'highly inappropriate', says government officials shoud "stay away" from these kind of activities.

http://www.svd.se/dynamiskt/inrikes/did_11847322.asp (From the 2nd largest Swedish newspaper; I haven't been able to find an english link yet)

The party in question has filed a complaint against the government with both the Office of the Chancellor of Justice and the Parliamentary Ombudsman. The official Press Ombudsman and leading publicists have likened the matter to the censuring of free press during World War II. People are justifiably upset that government officials (and the "Security Police", who was also involved) can shut down a Party website in this way. The Chancellor of Justice has by the way already tried the aspect of the actual publishing of the cartoons and deemed it not to fall under hate-speech laws.

Still another thing entirely?
