Bush seeks 20 billion dollars more for Katrina rebuilding

17/02/2006 01h01

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President George W. Bush sought almost 20 billion dollars in extra funding to pay for Hurricane Katrina rebuilding around New Orleans. The 19.8 billion dollar request to Congress comes on top of more than 87 billion dollars already approved for the reconstruction effort after the August 29 storm that killed 1,300 people and destroyed 300,000 homes.

A Congress report this week strongly criticized the administration for failing to heed warnings before the hurricane and responding too slowly after.

The White House proposed 9.4 billion dollars for continuing disaster relief for the homeless and rebuilding public facilities, 4.2 billion dollars to protect or relocate housing and infrastructure in flood zones in Louisiana and 1.3 billion dollars for disaster loans.

Bush also sought 1.3 billion dollars to bolster hurricane and storm defenses in the New Orleans region, which bore the brunt of Hurricane Katrina. The government has already alloted 1.5 billion dollars for flood protection for the devastated city.

2. No kidding. Sure ain't helping any victims.
Yet the money is going someplace. Wow. I look for Bush to move to some country without extradition to the US somewhere around Jan. 21,2009.

5. It has to get past congress
first. I think the timing of his request is suspect, coming as it does on the heels of the House report condemning executive inaction, but will accept it gladly. New Orleans is still languishing, and this has some possibility of making some of us whole or nearly so.

6. When you consider how much money has gone missing in Iraq...

I wouldn't be holding my breath to see any of it reach the people who really need it in Alabama, Mississippi or Louisiana.
