NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Vice President Dick Cheney's exclusive interview about his weekend hunting accident boosted Fox News' ratings Wednesday night.

The channel's Washington managing editor, Brit Hume, scored the exclusive interview with Cheney. The vice president had been roundly criticized because 24 hours elapsed before reporters learned that Cheney had accidentally shot a fellow hunter Saturday afternoon at a Texas ranch.

"Special Report With Brit Hume" averaged 2.1 million viewers from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, when the interview with Cheney aired, according to data released Thursday by Nielsen Media Research. That included 513,000 viewers in the adults 25-54 demographic.

That made "Special Report" the most-watched show on Fox News on Wednesday night, including its formidable primetime lineup of "The O'Reilly Factor," "Hannity & Colmes" and "On the Record With Greta Van Susteren." The O'Reilly show averaged 2.1 million viewers Wednesday night.

2. Not really impressive.
Lots of people are interested in this, just not enough to want to see another lie-fest on Fox.

4. I didn't watch it, but I assume Hume reached over and gave Cheney...
a gentle, yet manly, pat on the shoulder when Cheney was overwhelmed by emotion

9. Fact is, very few cable news watchers.
I watched a symposium on television news, on television, and the guy on the PBS Newshour was razzing the cable news programs comparing ratings. I don't remember the numbers, but he had MANY more viewers than all the cable at any time slot added together. Suarez.

7. Let no one be fooled:
people were just furious about how Cheney could do such a thing. This was not a positive ratings spin. This was desperation on the White House's part.

And let's not forget: Cheney has an approval rating of 19%. People don't like him. Period. The man is so disgusting, only a python would move in closer to get a better look at him.

10. Reality Check: Cheney got all of O'Reilly's audience and another 400k
With an approval rating around 16%, Cheney was simply stopping the bleeding amongst his most faithful constituents.

Fox is a loudspeaker for the WH. Cheney simply took a turn on the hotseat amongst his adoring fans and defenders.

Imagine the hallway conversations:

"Mr Vice President, I'm so sorry about your...incident."
"It must have been horrible for you to watch him almost die."
"I know what you're going through, Dick. I've been in your shoes."
"Can I come to the Christmas Party next year?"

21. The ratings would have been higher but...
Potential viewers had to drop their cable to pay for the increase in heating bills.
