Cleric offers reward for killing of cartoonist

A Pakistani cleric today offered 1.5m rupees (£9,600) and a car as a reward to anyone who killed the cartoonist who drew images of the prophet Muhammad.
Mohammed Yousaf Qureshi, a prayer leader at the Mohabat Khan mosque in Peshawar, made the announcement to a 1,000-strong crowd outside the mosque after Friday prayers.

"This is a unanimous decision by all imams that whoever insults the prophet deserves to be killed, and whoever will take this insulting man to his end will get this prize," he said.

It was unclear which of the cartoonists who contributed drawings to Denmark's Jyllands-Posten newspaper was being targeted by Mr Qureshi.

1. If these cartoons turn out to be a U.S. plant, I have to say it's quite
Brilliant.

Talk about letting your enemy shoot themselves in the foot.

2. Cartoon row: Cleric offers $ 1 million bounty
Peshawar: A Pakistani cleric on Friday announced a $1 million bounty for killing a cartoonist who drew Prophet Muhammad, as thousands joined street rallies across the country and authorities arrested scores of protesters.

Police put another Islamist leader under house detention amid fears that the demonstrations held after Friday prayers would turn violent, after riots this week killed five people, but most protests passed off peacefully.

3. Does the asshole actually got it?
First question you have to ask when someone asks for others to do their dirty work.

4. This is not Islam
don't for a moment think it is. This is yet another example of extremists using Islam as an excuse to enlarge their own power an influence. And of course Bush loves it when extremists do this, because demonizing Muslims goes right along with his agenda.

5. Multiple cartoonists.
Is he going to pony up multiple awards, or does the award just cover the cartoonists in the agreggate?

Now, if he had issued a fatwa and award calling for assassinating the fools who issued death threats against the various illustrators and cartoonists and caused them to feel intimidated--the root of the problem--maybe he'd be worth something. As it is, there's another hocker in Muhammed's face. Possibly pissing on him. With barely a dishonorable mention.

7. Since I work at a multi-national corporation
I feel sorry for the peaceful mulims like the ones at my work.

This radicalism is adding to the already existing haterd the bush administration instilled by routinely reffering to muslims and terrorists as the same thing.

Too bad we can't get the extreme muslims and christians into one room and let them do anything they want to each other...

9. Does anyone know if this, in fact, illegal in Pakistan?
Does this actually violate any Pakistan law? I'm not asking for guesses but actual law of Pakistan. I don't know if Pakistan has adopted Sharia law or if they use an altered British system of laws or something else entirely.

12. Remember
Pakistan still enforces blasphemy laws and the penalty for such actions in Pakistan is death.

Mushy plays a nice game with the West and talks a good talk, but he's unwilling and unable to do anything.

I don't believe Pakistan is officially under Sharia law, but some provinces are.

that's why I'm wondering if the Imam is *technically* free and clear to call for the killing of the blasphemer...

15. And there are those who say these cartoonists knew what they were
doing (riling up religious/political conflict) when they drew their cartoons which IMO are criticism of taboo, censorship and of violence perpetrated in the name of Islam.

Not that they were angels of inclusiveness, but their lives will never be the same.
