US Democratic leader stages one-man Senate protest (Live on C-Span now)
Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 09:41 PM by NNN0LHI
Sounds like Reid is a little pissed?

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N10292280.htm

WASHINGTON, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Assistant U.S. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada waged a one-man marathon protest on Monday over what he denounced as callous treatment of his Democratic colleagues by the Republican majority.

Reid took the Senate floor just after 1 p.m. EST and about seven hours later was still on his feet, carefully rationing sips of water to stave off the need for bathroom breaks.

"You can only be slapped around so many times," said Reid, particularly upset by plans by Republicans to clear the chamber's schedule for a 30-hour Senate debate later this week on stalled conservative judicial nominees. "Around here, we have to work together."

The Republican plan has strained already frayed relations with Democrats, who earlier complained of being largely shut out of talks on pending energy and health care legislation.

4. I am starting to think these old guys have got to be in pretty good shape
...to pull this kind of stuff off? My hat is off to Reid. Don't think I could do it.

2. It's been GREAT!!!!
I watched him for about an hour this morning (MT) and have been watching the last few hours. He's reading THE HISTORY OF SEARCHLIGHT, NV. He and Levin had a great exchange a while ago. He is indeed pissed & he's making a point that the Senate cannot function without the cooperation of the minority.

Someone just sent him a note & he said "the Leader is one his way" -- don't know whether he means Frist or Daschle. Must be Frist. Reid just said he thinks it's an excellent schedule for tomorrow and he doesn't mind losing the floor.

3. Those who plan on joining him
need our support. Republicans have tried over and over and over and over to push through right wing fanatics like Pickering and Pryor. This is the only way they can seem to get it through-- by breaking the Dems so they can reach their majority. They can't abide by the rules of democracy so they resort to the same old dirty tricks.

I hope our side is strong enough to stand up to them. Urinals anyone?

5. There are times when you must just sacrifice some pride...
...and depend on a Depends.

For the Greater Good, I would do it -- but I don't think I'd tell anyone about it....

6. My guess is that he's done at least that
may have one of those tube/collector things. But he doesn't look all that much worse for the wear.

16. Catheter and leg bag?
That would do the trick! Lots better than wet drawers (or Depends).

Thank you, Senator Reid!

11. Reid is pro-life
I'm surprised anybody here likes him at all. His abortion position isn't that big of a deal for me but most people here hate anyone who is pro-life or even votes for the partial-birth abortion ban. I guess some people just forget about these things after one speech.

14. Well, let's just tar and feather him, then; 100% or nothing, right?
I'm not quite sure what your slant is here, but if you're unwilling to spare some admiration for someone who may differ on a major issue with you, then you're being impractical. The stakes are mighty high these days, so impracticality is tantamount to sabotage in some cases. Sorry to be a harsh party-liner on you, but if I can stomach the godcrap and the psychotic gun childishness, then you can should at least be able to recognize an ally when you see one.

If you want to take it to the ad absurdum extreme, then it's very hard to find anyone to like. Hell, I HATE the "under god" crap in the pledge, and the Senate voted 99-0 on a non-binding show of solidarity with it right after the 9th Circuit announced its decision. I'll save my rancor for the REAL nazis, and I suggest you do the same.

Mao and Chiang were able to bury the hatchet for a dozen years to get rid of the Japanese, I think you can tolerate a Dem who doesn't pass muster on an admittedly major issue.

Don't look now, the Greens are coming again...

15. Not pro-life...anti-choice, please
Sorry if it seems like I'm nit-picking; but I really don't like the implication that because I'm pro-choice, I'm anti-life.

20. I don't like to be called anti-choice, call me pro-life or anti-abortion

and I promise not to call you anti-life or pro-abortion.

I think a lot of time is wasted on arguing about what to call our stand on this issue. Many of us who call ourselves "pro-life" do so to emphasize our opposition to all forms of killing. We protested against the war in Viet Nam and we protested against capital punishment, and then suddenly people who had protested with us against the killing were advocating legalizing abortion, which is most certainly killing.

I don't favor making abortion illegal again but I want to see the number of abortions performed drop significantly. I think women should be working toward that goal because it affects us more directly than it does men. Better use of contraceptives can greatly reduce the "need" for abortions.

17. He's great!
He took time out for a side-trip to discuss trying to find a good way to find attractive plants to put in his Nevada home's yard, about 90 miles from Las Vegas.

He discussed the first round of plants being eaten immediately by hungry desert rabbits, as well as successive rounds of varied cactus plantings, and discussed the fact there are at least two kinds of rabbits in the desert. Very educational.

Noticed at one point his voice seemed a bit raspy, and he took time out to get a lozenge and a tiny sip of water. I think he had probably thought the entire event out, well in advance. I noticed that he was keeping a very close eye on the clock, and was pacing himself.

It's important that the Democrats keep it in front of the public that, contrary to the wailings and whinings of the Republicans, far, far more judges have been heard and approved than the entire two terms Senate Republicans dealt with (or NOT) Clinton's choices. The Republicans WILL repeat lies over and over, knowing we know they know we know they're lies, so it's up to Democrats to continually call them on it, and not collapse.

It's hard to believe, but you can tell some citizens actually DON'T do any reading, and apparently DO believe what G.O.P. Senators, etc. tell them. Only strong people like Reid and others can keep hope alive that one day ALL the public will "get it" and realize they've been had.

(I disagree with Reid on his anti-choice position, and his support of the Las Vegas gambling people who support the blockade on Cuba. I feel strongly about both issues, but I still love Reid. He's perfect, outside those two positions, I'm sure.)

18. It would help if MSNBC/CNN would go over there and Tape him and talk about
it, wouldn't it? Call some attention to what's going on rather than Rosie and whatever the flavor of the week is all the time. Remember them trailing Schwartzenneger and slobbering all over him.

When Roberty Byrd, Ted Kennedy and Levin and others were on the floor arguing against the IWR where was the whore press? Where?

Most people don't even know what they were doing and won't see Reid, unless they are C-Span junkies.

I'm glad he's doing this....I'm glad they're stoping the Judges. I just wish they had "voted as a block" like the Repugs when they had the chance and Jeffords came over. Where for a few months we had a chance to stop Bush's most agregious appointments. But that was Dashle to blame for that, imho.

19. Great stuff!
Read an article last week, some GOP Senate staffer was boasting how they really don't need to talk to the Dems at all anymore, they just shotgun whatever they want through without debate.

It's great to see someone take a stand. Dems got grapes after all.
