Falling gas prices helped stem a rise in wholesale inflation around the country in January, government figures released today showed. Gas prices have dropped below $2 a gallon in some spots around the country, although analysts warn the downward trend probably will not last.

Core inflation, which does not take into account the volatile energy and food sectors, jumped by 0.4 percent in January, the biggest one-month rise in a year. January's moderate PPI rise was the result of falling energy prices, analysts said.

The American Automobile Association reported today that nationwide gas prices have dropped to $2.260 a gallon for self-serve regular gasoline, down almost a penny from yesterday's $2.269.
The state of Missouri had the cheapest gas at $2.045 a gallon, the AAA said. But scattered consumers around the country are also reporting gas at less than $2 a gallon on fuel price Web sites.

In the Washington metropolitan area, gas averaged $2.339 a gallon today, down slightly more than a penny overnight.

2. So only the "good will" of the Middle East is between us & inflation?
And only the continuation of China's current economic policies, allowing us to keep borrowing boatloads of cash, is between us and economic collapse?

I feel better already...

8. Citgo same price as the other stations
The gas here in Kansas rose today from $1.93 to $2.09. Citgo is not any cheaper. Why doesn't Citgo charge less than the other stations? I'm sorry to burst your bubble but Citgo is just as bad as the rest.

11. I remember that...
I had just returned from a trip from Italy that I could barely afford (I was out of work at the time, but wanted to "enjoy" unemployment a little)...and gas prices had "skyrocketed"

Little did I know...

6. I don't know about wholesale inflation...
but what used to cost about $240 at the grocery store now costs about $290, and Centerpoint Energy (gas) & Entergy (electricity) have just increased the base costs for their products in my area. It now costs me more to stay home than it cost me a few years ago to drive 45 minutes each way back & forth to work.

9. January was the warmest month in 100 years
Now there's a bitter cold streak up and down the midwest and east.

February won't be as forgiving as energy prices make an upturn.
