Something to chew on: Gum gives G.I.s a lift (Caffeine Laced)

As if the possibility of getting killed in Iraq wasn't enough to keep soldiers up at night, the Pentagon has begun issuing a caffeine-packed gum called "Stay Alert" to keep the troops from drooping.

It packs a jolt equal to a 6-ounce cup of coffee, and sleep researchers said it clears the head faster than a cup of Joe.

"When you chew the gum, the caffeine is extruded into the saliva and is absorbed right through the tissues in the mouth into the bloodstream," said Dr. Tom Balkin of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.

"It gets into the brain very quickly, in about five minutes. It takes coffee about 20 to 25 minutes."

<snip>

Stay Alert will not be issued to regular grunts, but there is "an experimental first-strike ration for the Special Forces," Balkin said.

7. Is that "Red Ryder Brand" caffeinated chewing gum?
Maybe it will make him lick the metal flagpole in the White House Rose Garden tomorrow night.

9. During Desert Storm the driver on my tank was
falling asleep so I gave him my cure (I was falling asleep staring through the sights).

Open a packet of instant coffee and eat it like pop-rocks.

The taste alone can wake the dead. (crystal Taster's choice. Black Meth!)

They spend a lot of money on some stupid shit.

Goddamn Army.

11. Wonder how much of our money they wasted making this gum?
When they just could've bought the better-tasting Jolt gum.

It's caffeinated gum from Japan. I've had it and it does wake you up. Tastes good, too. Plus, some of the sticks say "Yes, Chewing!" on them.
