Prosecutors Seek 10 Years for Cunningham
SAN DIEGO -- Prosecutors on Friday asked that former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham be sentenced to the maximum of 10 years in prison for his "stunning betrayal of the public trust" by accepting bribes.

"Cunningham used his status as a war hero to get into Congress, and then he used his Congressional office to get rich," prosecutors wrote in a sentencing memorandum. "For the better part of a decade, Cunningham, in effect, erected a 'for sale' sign upon our nation's capital."
....
The prosecution's memo contained a copy of a "bribe menu" written under the congressional seal on Cunningham's office stationery. One column of figures represented the millions of dollars in contracts that could be "ordered" from Cunningham, according to prosecutors. The other column showed the amount of bribes Cunningham demanded in return.

Feds seek 10-year prison term for Cunningham
February 18, 2006

http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2006/02/19/news/top_stories/16_59_392_17_06.txt

SAN DIEGO ---- Painting a startling portrait of a congressman for sale who used a "bribe menu" and tampered with witnesses after he came under scrutiny, prosecutors said Friday that former U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham should serve the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for bribery and tax evasion.

Federal prosecutors also said that the tarnished war hero should pay at least $1.57 million in back taxes owed in the scheme in which he has admitted to taking more than $2.4 million in bribes and cheating on his taxes over a four-year period.

The recommendations by the U.S. attorney's office in San Diego came in a 35-page memorandum filed in advance of the scheduled March 3 sentencing of the disgraced, longtime North County lawmaker.

The document reveals for the first time Cunningham's use of a "bribe menu" and his attempt to influence witnesses after a federal grand jury began investigating him in June 2005.

10-year jail term sought for former US congressman

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- U.S. federal prosecutors has recommended that former Republican congressman Randall "Duke" Cunningham serve the maximum 10 years in prison for his "unparalleled corruption" activities, a report said Saturday.

They also recommended that Cunningham, who resigned in November after pleading guilty to bribery and tax evasion, be fined 1.56 million U.S. dollars and forfeit some 1.8 million dollars in bribe money and items from four defense contractors, according to the Los Angeles Times newspaper.

In a document released Friday, the prosecutors accuse Cunningham of arranging and overseeing a "lengthy and widespread bribery" scheme and even providing the co-conspirators with a "bribe menu" detailing how much money he required to provide a certain dollar amount in federal contracts.

Cunningham, 63, a Vietnam War hero and conservative Republican who was in his eighth term when he resigned, is to be sentenced on March 3.

15. Hey, isn't this guy a Republican?
Why should he have to do any time at all? The only possible reason is that he has been selected as a scapegoat. Everybody else does the crime (too) - but he does the time.

16. Not good enough. I want the death penalty
We need to send a message that this kind of stuff is taken seriously by disposing of folks like this.

The death penalty should be used against white collar and other corporate criminals too.

Also, serious questions have been raised with regard to Mr. Cunningham's war service and whether or not his medals were deserved.

19. He'll serve a year, tops
I'd love to see this bit of compressed sleezeloaf get 10 years in real prison.

What he'll get is *maybe* a year in a country club prison, and the a presidential pardon citing "past service to his country" and "ill health" as the reasons.

21. I would like to see
I would like to see all of his benefits taken away, from him and his family. Like the health insurance plan that congress gets and his retirement paycheck. I assume these are lifetime rewards for service to the country. I would like to see him stripped of his right to vote, Republicans advocate for this, let him taste his own medicine. I would like to see him... well never mind.

Registered sex offenders are not allowed to hang out with little kids, I don't think people like him should be allowed in any kind of public office again. I don't think people like him should be allowed around any lobbying firms again. I don't think people like him should be around companies that pick up government contracts again. I don't think people like him should be allowed their military retirement again. I don't think people like him should be allowed. I am betting he will get done with his time in jail and he will walk into a million dollar per year job with the USMC at 29 Palms. Let him go to a community college and pick up a trade in AC repair or something, Bush said this was a great thing to do.
