Aristide to return to Haiti soon
Johannesburg - Former Haitian president Jean Bertrand Aristide has ruled out returning to the politics of his country, SABC news reported on Tuesday.

In an interview with the broadcaster, Aristide said a date for his return to his country from South Africa would be announced as soon as the necessary consultations have taken place.

He said newly elected president Rene Preval would consult with the United Nations, other Caribbean states and South Africa about his return.

"I do believe I will be back as soon as possible and I will continue to invest in education.

Exiled Aristide vows to return to Haiti
Pretoria, South Africa

22 February 2006 12:18

Haitian leader Jean Bertrand Aristide, who is living in exile in South Africa, on Wednesday defended his decision to return home, saying it is his right as a citizen of the Caribbean nation.
(snip)

He has said he first needs to consult with Préval, his one-time protégé, the United Nations and "other countries" before choosing a date for his return.

He made it clear, however, that he will not return to politics.

"My determination is to be back in education, serving the people, not as a member of the public service but as a citizen," said Aristide, a former priest.

6. Will the same US military troops fly him back???
You know, the same US military troops who kidnapped and forcefully removed Aristide on bush's orders to overthrow Haiti's democratically elected president.

Just wondering.

12. that's what he did last time
will Preval reorganize an army and provide for his own security? there is no reason why Aristide shouldn't return to Haiti.

9. I hope they never get the chance to do it, or something worse.
Edited on Wed Feb-22-06 04:14 PM by Judi Lynn
They should be deeply ashamed of what they did. It was absolutely hideous. Unforgivable.

Too bad there was no one powerful enough to keep them from their monstrous behavior.

8. Haiti's Preval: Law Allows Aristide Return
Haiti's Preval: Law Allows Aristide Return
By STEVENSON JACOBS, Associated Press Writer

Wednesday, February 22, 2006
(02-22) 12:44 PST PORT-AU-PRINCE, (AP) --

Haitian President-elect Rene Preval said Wednesday that the constitution permits the return of ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who was forced to flee into exile following a violent rebellion two years ago.

Preval, a former protege of Aristide's who shares the ousted leader's strong support among the poor, said the former president could not be barred from returning to the volatile Caribbean nation.

"My position is simple on President Aristide and any other citizen who wants to come to Haiti," Preval, also a former president, said in his first news conference since he was declared the winner of the Feb. 7 election. "Article 41 of the Haitian Constitution says that no Haitian needs a visa to enter or leave the country."

Aristide said Tuesday that he wants to return from exile in South Africa, but said the timing of his arrival in Haiti would be up to "my president" and other leaders.

10. Aristide Ready for Return to Haiti
Aristide Ready for Return to Haiti

by MICHELLE FAUL, Associated Press Writer

Wednesday, February 22, 2006
(02-22) 14:10 PST PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) --

Ousted Haitian leader Jean-Bertrand Aristide is ready to end what he calls an unconstitutional exile, but said Wednesday the timing of his return is up to "my president" and other leaders.

Aristide congratulated the Haitian people and his one-time protege, President-elect Rene Preval, on the Feb. 7 election, only the fourth in Haiti's 202 years of independence.

Preval was belatedly declared victor Feb. 16 as ongoing protests over alleged election irregularities threatened to turn violent.

"What happened indicates the road toward freedom and democracy and not toward coups d'etat," he said Wednesday in an interview with international news agencies.
