Senate to Pull All-Nighter Over Judges
http://abcnews.go.com/wire/Politics/ap20031111_1596.html

WASHINGTON Nov. 11 — It's a grudge that's been building for two years.
In a legislative version of "Survivor," Republicans and Democrats will square off Wednesday in an all-night Senate talkathon on who's to blame for some of President Bush's political nominees not making it to the federal appeals bench.
While both parties hope the debate will mobilize their political bases, the contestants already know the winner: the status quo.

For 30 straight hours from Wednesday evening through midnight Thursday senators will condemn each other and Bush for the impasse over four U.S. Appeals Court nominees: Alabama Attorney General William Pryor, Texas judge Priscilla Owen, Mississippi judge Charles Pickering and Hispanic lawyer Miguel Estrada.
Democrats have refused to allow confirmation votes, and Republicans have not been able to get the 60 votes to force them in a Senate split with 51 GOP senators, 48 Democrats and one independent. Frustrated at the delays, Estrada withdrew his nomination in September.
Republicans hope the all-night Senate session the first to go past 4 a.m. since 1992 will swing public favor and maybe some campaign cash their way during the winter break. Conservatives have complained the GOP hasn't done enough to highlight the Democrats' blockades.

Fuckem….stick to your guns Dems….

1. More judges have been approved under Bush than under Clinton.
What the hell, only 4 judges TOTAL out of several hundred have been held up. Republicans are crybaby whiners.

3. Exactly!
But "they" never bring up that valid point. It's just these few totally unqualified judges who are being blocked.

Maybe we should send midnight care packages or something to the Democratic Senators. :D

18. They want TOTAL control
and fear the diebold machines may not be able to pull off another "victory" for them. The judiciary is their last chance to force their extremist views down our throats for the next 30 years. If they can manage to get these "nominees" through their would be NO stopping their insane choices. Bet the media won't mention that the Democrats have blocked only a handful of rightwing freaks compared to the hundreds of moderate choices of President Clinton stopped cold by the rethugs.

4. just how much is this BS going to cost us?

staff overtime, security, etc etc etc

the senate is there to do the PEOPLE'S business, not the WH's business. if Dem don't start standing up AGGRESSIVELY to the totalitarian tactics of bushco's senate lackeys.

(never forget that bushco INSTALLED frist to do THEIR bidding.

this WHINE-a-THON is unprecedented partisan madness.

and they will get away with it.\

14. Get up off the floor. It's unsightly.
I saw his statement as acquiescence, a sad statement of fact. If you're actually rolling on the floor and laughing your MF ass off, you may wish to see a physician about possible seizures.

9. I'll take the status quo
Every time we dismiss one of their nominees REPEATEDLY, it just makes the administration look stupid. To the American public it looks like they couldn't pass senatorial muster, so why do they keep pushing it?
To me it makes them look like what they are: a bunch of bullies who have no better candidates to bribe into those top spots.

19. Same here
Yep, the status quo's working just fine. :-)

The argument that Repugs are put-upon by Democratic obstruction is a pretty hard sell when they've got both houses. For that matter, the judicial confirmation process is a non-starter for most voters.

This is the most useful the Dems have been yet during the Bush administration - don't stop now, fellas!

10. All this for FOUR nominees
These asshole republicans just want it all. They won't concede on anything. The senate has confirmed 168 judges and rejected 4. As Reid said last night, "One, two, three, FOUR." This is absolutely ridiculous. Now, how many of Clinton's did they reject? A lot more than one, two, three, FOUR!

21. Debate on Iraq resolution was 30 hours
Interesting that the GOP equates the confirmation of 4 judges to a resolution on war. :puke:
