Eleven Cities Show Interest in DNC 2008
WASHINGTON - Eleven cities have shown interest in playing host to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, twice the number of cities that applied to get the 2004 gathering.

The DNC initially sent out letters to more than 30 cities, giving them an overview and finding out their level of interest.

The 11 cities that said they were interested: Anaheim, Calif.; Dallas; Denver; Detroit; Las Vegas; Minneapolis; New Orleans; New York; Orlando, Fla.; Phoenix and San Antonio.

Some of the cities are in critical swing states like Florida and Arizona, while others are in population centers like New York and the Los Angeles area. Those in the Southwest and Rocky Mountain region are in states where Democrats hope a growing Hispanic population could help tip the balance. Dallas and San Antonio are in firmly Republican Texas.

The location of these cities and the political inclination of those states will not be the only consideration. The cities must have a convention space that can seat 23,000 to 25,000 people (in portable or non-portable seating), must have 17,000 hotel rooms and 1,000 suites available, and be able to provide adequate office space, media work space and transportation to and from the convention site.

I think I'd put my money on Phoenix; a "real America" state (no "eastern liberal" taint) with Democratic Leadership.

4. No, New Orelans would be bad choice for that reason...
if recovery hasn't happened, Dems can't point to the fact if, at the same time, they're partying and schmoozing at the hotels and restaurants in the French Quarter. If it HAS happened, the Republicans will claim credit for it, diluting the message as well.

47. No, that's exactly why we should go. It will help the city recover. A
major part of the convention could be organized as a hands on effort to actually pitch in. New Orleans desperately needs crowds to be seen having a good time in their city.

Edited on Tue Feb-28-06 01:06 AM by kgfnally
When they're NOT in the convention hall, have them out IN N.O., putting their hands in where help is needed, and doing themselves some of what needs to be done.

The political ramifications of such a generous gesture, during a time when the participants in the respective conventions are usually, as you (accurately) put it, "schmoozing", would stand as a symbol of the real good the Democrats intend to do if put into office.

I think, if done correctly, a N.O. convention could work. For that to happen, though, someone needs to think outside the box.

Note to buddysmellgood: I didn't read your post before I posted this.

Note to self: read the whole thread first next time.

60. similarly, the same with a Detroit convention
Michigan, and Detroit in particular, has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country right now (just behind NOLA, basically), and I think it would be a good thing to enmesh the dems in an environment like that. For some, they might actually decide to help for once. For others, it might be a bit of an eye-opener to them to actually see impoverished areas of the country. We're not a party of rich fatcats (well, not totally). We're the party of the grassroots, the party of the downtrodden working class man. I think it COULD work well.

work clothes and actually working during scheduled times, and forego the massive party scene. That's the message we ought to be sending. Let the contrast between our convention and theirs speak for itself.

27. The infrastructure doesn't exist to handle this. But the entire
US House and Senate should be required to spend 1 month in a tent-city on the edge of the 9th ward, using the biffies and carrying water from the faucets to their abode. Each day they would have to pick up debris, particularly rotting food and personal effects of former residents. No staff, no outside contact with the big world, only the food they can cook on their camp stoves. Perhaps then we might see some action for that poor blighted community.

And shed lots of light on the CRAPPY job the republicans have done for our country.

11. Las Vegas fits most of the the criteria to qualify --
we've got the hotel rooms, for sure, and a massive convention center that is now serviced by a monorail (that only goes to the Strip hotels, but still . . .) -- and believe it or not, we're definitely blue.

The rest of the state is rural and conservative -- or urban and conservative, unfortunately. Of course, you can say the same about most of the states with cities vying for the convention.

57. Did you know that the Las Vegas Strip is only a couple of miles
long? That the population of Clark County is over 1.6 million? Do you think ALL those people live on the Strip and work in the casinos (or the strip clubs)?

Just because you've never bothered to step off the Strip doesn't mean there isn't more to this city -- and you insult the people who live here with cheap cracks like the one you made.

You'll take advantage of the "entertainment" Las Vegas offers tourists on the one hand -- and, apparently, slap the city silly with the other. And it's a democratic city you're trashing, bud.

Thanks.

I would say New Orleans, because where else can you really get such a stark naked representation of the failure of the Bush Administration to act in the interests of the American people? But, I think it would seem way too politically opportunistic of the Dems, so Denver would be a damn good alternative choice.

50. Minneapolis
is alsoin the running to host the GOP convention. Would be an interesting choice if they are wanting to try and the convention to tilt the state into the red.

The RNC cities that have been asked to bid are:

Anaheim, Calif.; Atlanta; Boston; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; Denver; Detroit; Houston; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; Kansas City, Mo.; Memphis, Tenn.; Miami; Minneapolis; Nashville, Tenn.; New Orleans; New York; Orlando, Fla.; Philadelphia; Phoenix; Pittsburgh; Portland, Ore.; Sacramento, Calif.; San Antonio; San Diego; San Francisco; Seattle; St. Louis, Mo.; and Tampa.

But no word as to how many have actually said they were interested. I do know that Atlanta and Chicago have both declined the opportunity to host the their convention.

55. LV may make bid to host Democrats
WASHINGTON -- Las Vegas is among 11 cities that have shown interest in playing host to the 2008 Democratic National Convention. That's twice the number of cities that applied to get the 2004 gathering.

The Democratic National Committee initially sent out letters to more than 30 cities to give them an overview and find out their level of interest.

The other cities that indicated they were interested: Anaheim, Calif.; Dallas; Denver; Detroit; Minneapolis; New Orleans; New York; Orlando, Fla.; Phoenix and San Antonio.

"We did respond saying yes, we would be interested," said Erika Yowell, spokeswoman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The authority asked the Democrats to send along more detailed specifications in a "bid package" for consideration. "The ball is now in the DNC's court," she said.

68. Denver makes the most sense...
...from a weather perspective, and for political strategy. States like Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada should be reliable Democratic states. All of these states are growing, and will pick up electoral votes(and seats in the House) after the 2010 census. We have to successfully communicate the goals of the Democratic Party in the language and spirit of the more individualist West. Neoconservatism, and Christian Fundamentalism are enemies to the more libertarian vibe in these states.

It should be loudly and clearly stated, Dems aren't going to take your guns away, eminent domain for private use is a travesty, we embrace the growing Hispanic communities(American Dream in action), we will invest in education/science/tech, and we will not allow the great American West to become a radioactive dumping ground(Yucca Mt.). These are just a few issues to lead with. We are the party of opportunity for all! I think Denver would be the perfect place to launch our campaign to win the hearts of the West.

69. New Orleans has got to be the sentimental favorite...
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 07:07 AM by Buns_of_Fire
As much as I'd like to see Fremont Street lit up, with their seven-gazillion-watt sound system playing "Happy Days Are Here Again" (no, I know downtown isn't appropriate), I think New Orleans could wind up a win-win situation for all concerned.

And personally, I don't give a rat's behind if the 'lickins start sniffing about "politicizing" it. After all, it is politics we're playing here, and I notice that they weren't afraid to ship their cheap-ass selves, band-aids and all, to NYC... :-)

70. Detroit
It'll ensure that all the improvements made for the All Star game and the Superbowl continue.

I'm hoping for two sports championship parties this summer, or a really big combined party for both teams (Red Wings and Pistons). The Pistons are looking pretty solid. The Wings are a bit iffier, mainly because of their propensity to choke in the first or second round of playoffs after having a wonderful season.
