Recall forces told how to 'trash' governor (memo)
SF Chronicle

Consultant's memo advises Issa's troops to 'kill Davis softly'

A private memo from a prominent Republican strategist offers a rare glimpse at the bare-knuckle approaches being considered to oust Gov. Gray Davis, outlining numerous ways to "kill Davis softly" in the recall effort without turning the unpopular governor into a sympathetic figure.

"While it is important to trash the governor," reads the blunt, 17-page memo from Virginia-based communications expert Frank Luntz, "it should be done in the context of regret, sadness and balance."

The internal memo dated July 10 was commissioned by Rep. Darrell Issa's Rescue California committee, which has led the effort to put the unprecedented recall of California's governor on the ballot. The committee financed by Issa, R-Vista (San Diego County) and two other pro-recall groups say they have gathered more than 1.6 million signatures in support of their effort -- far more than needed to put the recall to a vote.

Not surprising, just politics
The world of politics is rife with strategists and image makers. To deny this activity occurs on both sides is to deny reality. I see no more than that in this.

Frank Luntz...
works for MSGOP and is their pollster while being a Right Wing operative at the same time. Isn't there a conflict of interest here by having someone work for the media and being a reich wing shrill at the same time???

GOP Rips Calif. Gov. Davis for Deficit
Thu Jul 17, 6:03 PM ET

By MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Memo to candidates: Tell voters your opponent "turned record surpluses into record deficits." Stress how many jobs have been lost on his watch.

Kinda like throwing your garbage into your neighbor's yard, then reporting him to the neighborhood association for littering.

I'm surprised we're not all ripping Luntz to shreds more vigorously.

Have we lost our appetite? ;-)

5. ABCNote tries to soften GOP/Luntz smell by saying Dems email it
to each other - as if the act of emailing around to other Dems the GOP Attack Plan makes the Dems the ones spreading the word on how to shovel shit.

And then the ABCNote refers to Luntz as retired from Politics - Good Golly Ms Molly - there is a whole lot of lying going on!

:-)

7. Why doesn't this article say that Luntz is *'s pollster as well?
I'm happy to see their plan laid bare, but I'm a little puzzled. I see the the author connects Luntz to Newt, and says that this fact reflects indicates how highly connected the recall effort is to the GOP. Please! Luntz gets the big bucks to poll and run focus groups on behalf of the boy king, who simulateously pays for his advice while disavowing any use of such Clintonian tools. He's a Dick Morriss without the love of toe sucking! (I'll leave others to speculate on what he *does* love to suck!)

I'm always shocked, shocked that our liberal media fails to identify him as the Republican operative that he is. He spent all of election 2000 running mock focus groups for MSNBC, which never thought it necessary to reveal his connection to Bush. Lately, he's been quoted in the NY Times commenting on the poor quality of Dem candidates. Of course he thinks the Dems are lame! That's his job!
