Police seized in Jordan jail riot

1 March 2006

A number of policemen have been taken hostage after riots broke out in several Jordanian prisons where Islamist militants are being held.

Clashes broke out when police entered al-Juwaida prison to move two inmates sentenced to death. Prisoners feared the two men were going to be executed.

The rioting then spread to two other prisons in Jordan.

1. Jordanian Islamist inmates hold police hostage

Jordanian Islamist inmates loyal to al Qaeda are holding up to eight police officers hostage and were negotiating for their release, official sources said on Wednesday.

The hostage-taking took place after Jordanian troops clashed with prisoners in three major prisons when they stormed them to move top security Islamist detainees, security sources said.

Some of the country's most dangerous al Qaeda followers of its leader in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi are being held there.
