Vermonter killed in Iraq

By Wilson Ring, Associated Press Writer | March 2, 2006

COLCHESTER, Vt. --Vermont National Guard Spc. Christopher Merchant of Hardwick was killed
in a coordinated attack on Iraqi police headquarters in Iraq, the National Guard said Thursday.

Merchant, 32, was killed Wednesday in an observation tour roughly three miles northwest of Ramadi.
Two New Hampshire Guard soldiers -- Sgt. Jose Pequeno, 32, of Lisbon, N.H., and Pvt. Richard Ghent,
20, of Rochester, N.H. -- were wounded in the same attack.

Merchant was serving in the Ramadi area with Task Force Saber.

1. Pile another one on!

Grass Bush

Pile the bodies high in Austerlitz and Waterloo <[br />Shovel them under and let me work--
I am the grass; bush; I cover all.

And pile them high in Gettyburg Baghdad
And pile them high in Ypres and Vedum Mossoul and Al Fallaujah

Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:
What place is this?

I am the grass bush.
Let me work.

Carl Sandburg

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

6. That a great poem. And yes, it brought a tear to my eye!
Thank you.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

5. Spc. Merchant`s home is
a matter of minutes from here. He leaves a wife and FOUR children. I could cry.

Going out to move my VERMONT SAYS NO TO WAR yard sign even closer to the road.

7. I read that VT has lost more soldiers in Iraq per capita than any state
So very sad...and needless.

Maine lost a soldier over the weekend, too.
