Tom DeLay Faces First Big Post-Indictment Test
Tom DeLay Faces First Big Post-Indictment Test
Embattled Congressman Faces Test on Tuesday, While Elsewhere in Texas, a 95-Year-Old Stumps for Votes

By TEDDY DAVIS

March 3, 2006 — When Texans go to the polls on Tuesday, all eyes will be on Rep. Tom DeLay's vote total in his Houston-based district.

Having vastly outspent his three Republican rivals and having carefully targeted the Republican faithful, the former House majority leader is expected to win the GOP's nomination to represent the 22nd district of Texas.

But political insiders will be closely watching Tuesday's results to see whether the "Hammer" wins going away or he just squeaks by.

Non-partisan political analyst Stu Rothenberg tells ABC News that it's "not impossible" that DeLay will be forced into a run-off against Republican Tom Campbell, his strongest rival. Texas law mandates a runoff if no candidate gets 50 percent plus one. If necessary, the runoff would be held April 11.

A Primary Win Won't Be End to DeLay's Troubles

Assuming DeLay gets through the primary, Rothenberg thinks DeLay is in "huge trouble" come November. The Rothenberg Political Report rates DeLay as one of the 10 most vulnerable House incumbents in the country. The Democratic nominee will be Nick Lampson, a well-financed former member of Congress.

Please nominate the other guy (whoever the hell else is running on the R ticket for that nomination!) --

I'm worried about some Rethug Texas voters who will go to the polls only to give "Tommy Termite" their "vote of confidence" and I sure hope that doesn't happen!!!!

12. IIRC, Tom DeLay is yet another Republican Chickenhawk
However, he'll be tried in Texas, so we'll just have to wait and see how hard the hammer of justice falls on The Hammer.

13. Fingers are crossed.
Sad when you have hope for justice, instead of expecting it.

15. Tom DeLay ally finds home at Apple
Tom DeLay ally finds home at Apple
March 3, 2006 4:22 PM PST
Apple doesn't seem to be the first company you'd think of if you were looking for Republican lawyers well versed in redrawing congressional districts, but the job market makes for novel combinations.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based computer maker now employs Joby Fortson, a former aide to Representative Joe Barton, a Texas Republican, according to the New Yorker Magazine. In 2003, DeLay helped push through a state bill that redrew the congressional districts in the state. The plan helped add Republicans to the House of Representatives.

Fortson wrote a memo at the time, according to the magazine, that outlined the partisan nature of the bill. In the memo, Fortson noted that Martin Frost, the state's senior Democratic congressman, would have to run in a different district.

"Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha....His district disappeared," wrote Fortson.

"This is the most aggressive map I have ever seen," he wrote. "This has a real national impact that should assure that Republicans keep the House no matter the national mood."
