Nepal Rights Commission Wants Facts from Govt on Disappearances
Kathmandu, March 5: Nepal's official human rights watchdog has asked the government to publicize the status of over 700 people said to have been disappeared after they were allegedly taken into custody by the security forces.

In a letter sent to the Office of the Prime Minister on Friday, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Nepal urged the government to make public the condition of those who are now disappearing.

NHRC's call follows a series of protest demonstrations and sit-ins held by the families of "disappeared people" at the premises of the NHRC at Pulchowk near the Capital since Thursday. They have asked the NHRC to exert pressure on the government to make the condition of disappeared people public.

The peaceful agitators said police mishandled children and women participating in the sit-in Friday afternoon. <snip>

1. "King" Gyanendra must fall.
The feudal autocratic regime of Gyanendra does not have the support of the Nepali people. Its crimes are great. Best wishes to the people of Nepal on their fight for freedom.
