Laura Bush promotes Head Start en route to N.C. campaign stop
MORRISVILLE, N.C. (AP)

First lady Laura Bush read to a group of children in a Head Start program for migrant families on Friday, but the White House pets were the real hit of the event as far as the kids were concerned.

In a mock-up classroom created in a maintenance building at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, Bush read to six boys and two girls from a book called "That's My Dog!" by Rick Walton.

Mock Up Classrooms ....
The school of the GOP inspired future .....

Ask Dick Cheney: HE voted against Head Start every chance he had ....

The goal of the GOP is not to lower the costs of public services: it is the complete dismantling of progressive government, which includes public schooling .....

Typical
That's standard operating procedure for the Bushes... talk about how much you support a program (in order to portray yourself as compassionate) and then strip the offending program of its funding.

It's also SOP to have their worker bees craft phony stages for these photo ops.

Breathtaking.

BTW, she should have read a book called "That's My Chimp!" to the children.

4. more talk
on top of gutting head start, Teach for America just lost Americorps funding (for the price of a $5,000 education award, the program put almost 2000 new teachers a year into the most desperate school districts.) but now it is going, going...

5. disgusting
and reminiscent of that incident where they created a "warehouse" backdrop for one of Bush*'s speeches, but found that the boxes were stamped "made in china", so they had to quickly cover them with "made in usa" stickers.

Head Start while her husband seeks to dismantle it? Poor Laura, waiting at the station for the clue train that never arrives.

8. Talk about false advertising!
Every reference to Laura Bush in a White House speech or a newspaper puff piece refers to her work as a librarian and teacher, implying that libraries and schools will be top priorities for the administration, particularly with her influence...

...but fails to mention that her husband has recommended cuts to literacy programs, libraries and after-school programs. This is her influence?

They also fail to mention that she got out of teaching and librarianship when she married George W. Bush. If the work with the kids really made her heart sing, why did she give it up so promptly and completely?

Laura Bush is also put forth as having no particular taste for politics...

...yet the first thing she did upon marrying for George W. Bush was to go off and campaign with him on his first, unsuccessful election bid.

On top of that, she's making the rounds as a fundraiser.

THIS IS NOT THE FIRST LADY THAT WAS ADVERTISED.

Let's trade her in for a first spouse with his or her priorities in order! Bring on 2004!

11. Quit BEFORE she married
Actually, she quit when they got engaged. Personally, I don't know anyone who has done that. And, there was no mystery about his upcoming district 19 congressional run---so...our "just loved teaching and kiddos" gal who "dislikes politics" and "was a democrat" meets a man who has opposite political views, is planning a major political campaign/career, and decides to get married "on the quick" and immediately quits her job.

Yep, it must have been instant and blinding true love.

She's just a prop.

10. Ha!ha! reminds me of the mock-markets from Ceausescu's Romania!
He was touring farmer's markets (usually empty) and they were schlepping fruits and vegetables from one market to another so he'd see the same ones over and over. The kicker? He knew it! When coming in NYC and seing Bloomingdales, the two commented to each other: "They filled it up for us" The deja vue is overwhelming!
