California Governor-Elect Faces Gridlocked Legislature, Massive Deficit

California's next governor, the actor-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger, will take office Monday, November 17. He faces a gridlocked legislature, a massive deficit, and skeptics who wonder if California is governable.

State Senator John Vasconcellos is one of the skeptics. The veteran legislator has spent 37 years in the California capital, Sacramento. A liberal Democrat, he says the state's government is not working, and both parties share the blame.

"The basic problem is that the structure of government in California is dysfunctional and can not be fixed, and the culture of politics is cynical and can not suffice to inspire people. We need structural change that is profound, comprehensive and massive, and cultural change as well," he said.

He says the troubles include a broken economy, a continuing fiscal crisis, and voters who are frustrated and distrustful.

6. He's shaping up to be our state's own Dubya
coming into office with a criminal history and working 5 minutes out of the year.

For days, Arnold Schwarzenegger's press office has been issuing advisories stating that the governor-elect has been busy holding "private transition meetings and discussions with members of his transition team."

He must be talking pretty loudly -- because a source in the know tells us Arnold actually has been vacationing with his family in Hawaii.

...

"We are not going to comment on where the governor-elect spends his personal time right now," team Arnold spokesman H.D. Palmer said Tuesday.

7. How could this happen?
Do people even consider qualifications for office anymore? Is it impossible to get the democratic masses to the polls?

10. Gridlock should be the norm against a rethug Governor
Make him look as bad and impotent as possible to prevent another mistake like this from happening again. Get another Democrat in there to clean up the mess and bring CA back into the black. The suffering for a few more years will be worth not letting a rethug take credit for a economic turnaround. Most CA resident I know will eat beans and suffer a bit more to prevent Arnie from succeeding in a recovery. Force a gridlock until the rethugs are totally out of power. Do not let them succeed at all costs!
