Foreign operation of airports to be reviewed

WASHINGTON -- As controversy over the Dubai ports deal begins to cool, lawmakers are raising new questions over who should manage the nation's air system.

Rep. Jon Porter, R-Nev., chairman of a subcommittee that oversees the federal work force, said the panel would meet next month to consider to what extent U.S. airports are being run by foreign firms.

Porter has identified five airports currently managed by companies based in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Spain. He said there could be more.

"We want to find out who is managing our airports, who is managing the security," Porter said Friday. "A thorough review of foreign management of U.S. airports needs to occur."

The first, sponsored by Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., would require that companies that own or operate "critical infrastructure" such as seaports and airports be majority-owned by U.S. citizens.
