Guardian: White House, 9-11 Panel OK Documents Deal
WASHINGTON (AP) - The independent commission on the Sept. 11 attacks announced an agreement Wednesday with the White House that would allow the review of classified intelligence documents previously withheld by the Bush administration.

The 10-member panel will designate a subcommittee that will examine the most sensitive documents and report back, commissioner Richard Ben-Veniste said. The four-person subcommittee will review some of the documents, but only two of those four commissioners will review others. The commission has not yet appointed the subcommittee.

<snip>

Ben-Veniste, a former Watergate prosecutor, said the subcommittee plan ``is not a perfect arrangement'' but gives the commission the access it needs. He said the commission has the authority to designate which members will serve on the subcommittee, and there will be no restrictions on sharing that material with the other commissioners.

<snip>

Another commissioner, former Indiana Rep. Tim Roemer, criticized the arrangement, saying the panel should have issued a subpoena rather than agree that only some members will see documents. ``Either the commissioners have access or they don't,'' Roemer said.

So this 10-member 9-11 panel will distill down to a *subcommittee* of four that can see *some* documents, but only two of those four will be allowed to see *other* documents....

1. I agree with Roemer, the whole committee should have access,
I wonder what went on behind the scenes for Ben-Veniste to agree to this "agreement"?

8. Thanks--
I'm guess I'm just used to seeing the Guardian breaking news about American politics. They've got some hellacious journalists working for them, doing a job that most American media has long since stopped doing for themselves.

7. Even This Bullshit "compromise" Will Never Happen
Because they'll never agree on who will be the four people...It will be endless negotiation and stonewalling. This is no agreement and there's no way in hell any Democrat will ever be allowed to set eyes on any of the WH's documents...

10. Somebody needs to get the family members out there to protest this
Maybe Soros ought to pour some money in to this.

The accord was also criticized by family members of victims of the attacks. The relatives have said all 10 commissioners should have access to the intelligence reports.

"Our understanding is that this is an unacceptable agreement," said Kristen Breitweiser, whose husband was killed in the attacks and who is now a spokeswoman for the Family Steering Committee, which represents many of the victims' families. "The details haven't been shared with us. But we understand that this access will be highly limited."

11. this reminds me ...
of a recent "West Wing" rerun (on Bravo) in which Josh met the guy from the congressional committee looking into the Bartlett M.S. coverup after dark in the park, and said he could read Donna's diary for "one hour" in "the coffeeshop across the street."
