U.S. probing possible third mad-cow case

WASHINGTON - The Department of Agriculture is investigating a possible third U.S. case of mad cow disease, officials said Saturday, which could be a setback after months of work to reopen beef trade with Japan and South Korea.

Results from two definitive tests on the dead cow will be available in four to seven days. The suspect animal was found when a brain sample yielded an "inconclusive" result in a less-accurate rapid-screening test.

John Clifford, the USDA's chief veterinarian, said there is no risk to public health as the carcass did not enter the food chain. The department did not say where the suspect animal was found.

American consumers generally have shrugged off the disease, fatal in cattle, since it was first discovered here in December 2003. Per capita consumption of beef has climbed and is forecast at 66.9 pounds in 2006.

Japan and South Korea have been slow to resume trade despite U.S. assurances that its beef is safe. Japan banned U.S. beef for two years, reopened trade for one month and then suspended it on Jan. 20 when inspectors found forbidden spinal material in veal.

Poor USA just ain't trusted ANYWHERE around the globe these days.

Sometimes, doing things the right way is less expensive that paying for a public relations campaign that is going to fall on deaf ears anyways.

With the effort the US puts into denial about Mad Cow, it's amazing that another case was diagnosed.

I'm so sick of their poisoning of our food system! Why don't americans want to here about this? The Europeans and the rest of the world all know about this crap.

On rapid screening tests on MY planet, we have negative and positive. There may occasionally be a WEAK positive. And we acknowledge that on further confirmatory testing, we may get a negative (then we refer to the first as a false positive).

"Inconclusive" is Orwellian doublespeak, IMHO. Anything not negative is a positive until proven otherwise.
