Democrat to enter U.S. Senate race to challenge Joseph Lieberman


HARTFORD, Conn. -- Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont entered Connecticut's U.S. Senate race Monday to challenge U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman for the Democratic nomination.

Lamont's challenge is the first Lieberman has faced from within his party during his 18 years in office.

Lamont hopes to garner the support of Connecticut Democrats who've expressed dissatisfaction with Lieberman's pro-war stance in Iraq and his perceived closeness with President Bush's administration.

"Our troops are making their country proud with their service," Lamont is quoted on his campaign Web site. "But this war is not making us any safer. It's time for US troops to move to the background and let the Iraqi people step forward and take responsibility for their own destiny."

Perhaps he was refering to Clinton's approval ratings during the Impeachment proceedings: 73%

His words could just as easily apply to his behavior now as he has no interest in censuring a pResident who has weakened and ignored the Constitution and has a 32% approval rating.

However, can't we get someone who isn't in tight with the large corporations. I would like to see more civil rights activists running. But between Lamont and Lieberman, Lamont is the one to back.

17. Lamont is "old money" actually
and his family tree is quite interesting. His grandfather was Corliss Lamont, a well known Socialist in his day. He strikes me as one of those old CT Yankees that can be quirky liberals. It's kind of nice.

P.S. Lamont is definitely handsomer than Joe (that's not saying much given the mug Joe has on him). He comes across as soft spoken (perhaps a little too much so)and very decent. He's a likable guy but not too approachable, maybe a bit like John Kerry.

We definitely need to purge our party of these DINO's, but the IN NAME ONLY part can at least help us gain a majority in Congress. Still, I'm sick to death of seeing people like Lieberman pretending to represent democratic principles, while at the same time, enabling the crooks that are destroying our nation. I hope Lamont wins the primary AND the general.

11. If the DINO's stay the GOP will still have a working majority
even if the Democratic party has a majority. When push comes to shove they'll vote the GOP way, to use and extreme example - no on impeachment. I can hear them now "this has be a far too decisive a process, that needs to end so that the healing can begin."

Why am I running?
I am running for the US Senate because Connecticut deserves a Senator who will stand up to the Bush administration whose policies are so harmful to our state and our country. What about censure would he have voted for that?
Where is he on Gay Marriage? That is my number 1 issue. I only want to support candidates who support Gay Marriage.
Where is he on Abortion?


I'd vote for Ned over the devil anyday but he's got to be a real progressive or what's the point?

61. I was at the State House yesterday for his announcement
He said he would have led the charge for filibuster on Alito. He is very pro gay rights. He is very pro-choice. He didn't mention the censure vote -- but from all else he was saying -- I think he would have voted for it. There was a certain energy in the room yesterday. I think this could be a big surprise this year. -- Let's hope! He seems to be a very progressive dem. I signed on to volunteer.

I was standing next to a guy that got a big laugh... when the guy said, "Ned knows there is evil in the world..." and the guy shouted out "Lieberman" was standing right next to me.

You have some special information you want to share with us about why Ned Lamont won't win?
I'd like to hear it.

We're talking about a primary here, not controlled by the vascillating sheeple in the middle but by activists like you and me. I don't see most Dems getting too excited about interrupting their day to go out and vote in a primary for Jo-mentum. I do, however see a lot of excited grass roots Dems ready to volunteer or contribute to someone who makes sense and is not the kind of opportunist tool of the Bush administration that Joe Lieberman certainly is.

If there is a movement for Joe (I've predicted before) it will come from Republicans injecting themselves into this race, somehow. He is their new Zell Miller, the Democratic MVP! As for me and the people I know, we'll be checking our voting status, changing from unafilliated (if necessary) and voting for Ned Lamont (by absentee preferably).

Each candidate needs to make a very public pledge that if they lose, they will endorse and actively campaign for the winner.

Lieberman's a Democrat, so I have no doubt that he would make such a pledge. Can Lamont's supporters say the same thing about their candidate?

This was posted in DU about 2 months ago, at the end of a long article about the problems that Lieberman was having with the antiwar Democrats in his own state, when he was asked what he thought about a possible Lamont challenge, Lieberman told the reporter that his name would be in the November ballot no matter what happens in the primary.

I'm pretty skeptical about what you say. For one thing, if he loses the Democratic Party, I don't see how Lieberman's name is on the ballot, unless it's as a nominee of another party, and Lieberman has already ruled that out.

I saw that too. It's common for candidates in the NE to end up on multiple lines. Especially NY.

for example he said nothing when Dick Cheney Flat out LIED about how Halliburton didn't get government money. Lord save us from any more standard bearers like this. esp with his comments yesterday regarding emergency room contraceptives in catholic hospitals and the censure motion. "we shouldn't be scolding the president" I seem to remember a bit of scolding came from holy joe when Clinton was president but that was sex which makes Joe's mind go all squishy - an assault on the fundamental rights granted in the constitution of the United Sates and lying his way into a war that has cost us irreplaceable blood and treasure - Joe's got no problem with that.

PEH. What a schmuck.

Holy crap. These numbers are simply amazing.

Rasmussen. 2/15. Likely voters. MoE 4.5% (No trend lines)

Lieberman (I) 45
Lamont (D) 24
Republican 14

Now this poll is pretty nonsensical, since Lieberman CAN'T run as an independent in the general election unless he were to quit the party before the filing deadline.

More useful, in the crosstabs of this poll we see that amongst Democrats, the breakdown is as follows:

Lieberman 47
Lamont 36

So Lieberman is under 50 amongst Democrats, just 11 points ahead, against a candidate no one has ever heard of. That's absolutely insane.

But it's clear that Lieberman is starting to feel the heat. Yesterday, people signed up to Lieberman's email list got the first email from Lieberman's camp since 2004, this one bragging about how tough he's been on the administration:
