This is about how Rep. Thomas (R-CA) handled something in a committee this morning. Apparently he called the DC police in enforce his will.

3. Sounds like they got a mark up of a big bill last night
and didn't have sufficient time to go through it so they objected to unanamous consent that the bill had been read. Bruhaha ensued as this was apparently unheard of. I think the Dems walked out.

Police and Sgt of Arms were called. This will be a big deal. Maybe the Dems "get" that the people will be behind them if they employ drastic methods.

Rangle back up.

Looks like Cong McGinnis (R-coward) was going to get his ass kicked by Cong Pete Stark(D-California). I think that McGinnis is in his 40's and Pete is well into his 60's. Looks like the Democrats are willing to really fight for there rights.

47. I called the fascist dimwit's office (Bill Thomas-R CA)
Edited on Fri Jul-18-03 05:23 PM by annak110
to complain big time and asked if Bill Thomas could be arrested for interfering in the proper running of the Federal Government.
The woman kept saying, " I understand your concern, I understand your concern..."

After that I called Pete Stark's office. I understood from them that the police explained to Thomas that they did not have the authority to arrest the Democrats.

I also went to the dimwit's website and raised hell.

These thugs continue to act like there should be only one party.
The repukes took an open bribe here in Colorado to pass an unconstitutional voucher bill. I have asked everyone I can think of to bring charges on the rightwing shill who gave the $78,000 (it was returned later, ostensibly because the bill was not really passed at that time but still the act itself, bribing a public official, is surely illegal everywhere, even in Colorado. Taking a bribe should be just as illegal. Why haven't charges been filed? Well apparently no lawyer would take such a case for fear that they could lose their license to practice law, anyway that is what I keep hearing.

9. Do NOT mess with Pete Stark
Apparently pissy little Scott Innes, an embarrassment to the great state of Colorado is claiming that Pete Stark (one of the better humans in all of our current government) physically threatened him. The Democrats, especially Sander Levin (MI), attest that late last night, when the Ways and Means Committee tried to force something through without having it read, the Dems balked and the Republicans had the police and Sergeant-at-arms called on them.

Sorry for the loose details, it's going on right now.

10. details on Democratic walk-out in the Post
Edited on Fri Jul-18-03 01:04 PM by lanlady
A House committee on Friday approved a $50 billion pension bill that would allow Americans to put more tax-deferred income into personal retirement accounts, but only after the Republican chairman summoned police in the midst of a Democratic boycott and protests over the way the measure was being handled.

The legislation, which over the next 10 years would also allow retirees to wait longer to draw money from their retirement funds, was approved by Republicans while Ways and Means Committee Democrats were huddled in an adjacent room. It could be considered by the full House next week.

Committee Chairman Bill Thomas, R-Calif., summoned police because he thought the lone Democrat to remain in the room, Rep. Pete Stark of California, was speaking out of line, other Republicans on the panel said. He asked police to remove Democrats from the adjacent room, but later rescinded that request, the Republicans said.

Assistant to the Sergeant of Arms Donald Kellaher, called in to mediate, said that "clearly the police in this circumstance have no role or authority to intervene."

24. The way the House is run currently is a disgrace
There was a cover story in the New Republic on how Democratic House members are basically kept from offering any alternative legislation and how the press is, for the most, too lazy to show up to cover any Democratic efforts (hence the mass whining in the vein of "Why aren't the Democrats doing anything?").

The article did note that the House Republicans were trying to get back at the Democrats after years of being in the minority, but I think it's safe to say -- in fact, it's a no-brainer -- that since DeLay became majority leader and since Bush seized power, there has been a huge icrease in the amount of ill-will, autocratic behavior, and just plan right-wing looniness. It's a sad state of affairs when even Newt Gingrich seems slightly less nasty by comparison. Besides, we had the Big Dog in office then, and he was good at holding approval ratings and being gracious to his enemies.

Meanwhile, stay tuned.

29. What's going on now? Silence on the floor - 3:20 pm et
Could someone familiar with parliamentary procedure help me with what's going on on the House floor now? They seem to have suspended discussion, turned the microphones off and are not gathered sort-of in the middle of the seating section.

I thought Pelosi had about 3 minutes left, and the acting Speaker said she would be allowed to close debate.

Thanks, oh wise ones,
Jennifer

31. My guess
and its just a guess.

This debate is about H.R. 324, put forth by Pelosi, that protests the Chairman's actions last night during the Pension Bill vote.

According to the House website, H.R. 324 is "considered as privileged matter".

So, I guess there's some negotiations going on down on the floor becaue time for debate is almost up (R's have 1 minute or less, Pelosi gets last comments).

Maybe, if the res comes up for a vote, it becomes "unprivileged", and the repukes don't want that to happen. Maybe.

She said We Will Fight. The Democrats Will Fight.

42. I know!
But it still trivializes what the situation is about. The fact that they brought up this 90 page amendment five minutes before Midnight without the Dems in committee being able to read it and debate it is evidence of tyranny in action. It was not democratic what they were trying to pull. The root of this story is obfuscated by the funny remarks.

39. A summary of the floor parliamentary action...
for more details, see the thread in GD.

After Bill Thomas went Nazi, Pelosi offered a resolution posing a Question of Privilege. 1 hour of debate evenly divided was held, and apparently some Repuke nut said something objectionable and got called to pull his words back, which he did by Unanimous Consent. The Repukes then moved to table, or kill, the resolution, which passed 170-143...they didn't give members that were in their offices enough time to get to the vote.

43. Great posts guys (generically, of course)
In '96 Newt Gingrich told a group of Young Republicans that the only thing that he didn't like about them is that they weren't "mean enough". His successor, DeLay (affectionately known as "the Hammer") has certainly met or exceeded Gingrich's expectations of meanness.

As a bonus, Delay and his ilk have also succeeded in removing any trace of civility from the halls of congress.

I'm reading the biography of John Adams presently....debates by our founding fathers over critical issues were more civil than the way these rw wackos are running things.

IMO...'bout f-ing time for the dems to stand up to them!
