Senate Ready To Approve Air Pollution Limits

http://www.thewbalchannel.com/news/8077610/detail.htmlANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Can power companies afford to slash pollutants at coal-fired plants without raising rates for customers?
The question sparked a long debate Thursday in the Maryland Senate, where lawmakers voted 34-12 to go ahead with a bill requiring seven coal-fired plants to dramatically slash four emissions, including carbon dioxide. A similar plan failed in the Senate last year. Gov. Robert Ehrlich has proposed new rules for power plants that would cut some emissions but not carbon dioxide, thought to contribute to global warming.
The bill, which still must get final approval in the Senate before heading to the House, would affect coal-fired power plants in central and southern Maryland. It also calls for Maryland to join seven northeast states, including Delaware, in a regional agreement to reduce carbon dioxide emissions 10 percent by 2019.
