Bush: Iraq Center Of War On Terror

CLEVELAND, Ohio (CNN) -- In the face of flagging support for the Iraq war, President Bush said Monday that the country is the central front in the war on terror.

Before an audience at the City Club of Cleveland, Bush cited the northern city of Tal Afar, once an insurgent stronghold.

The president said Iraqi troops took the lead in the retaking and rebuilding of the city. (Tal Afar locator map)

"In this city, we see the outlines of the Iraq that we and the Iraqi people have been fighting for," Bush said. "A free and secure people are getting back on their feet ... are participating in government and civic life."

2. There is no "War on Terror"; there is a "War for Empire"
It's absolutely essential that all progressives start calling out anyone who debases the English language with phrases like "war on terror"

How about a "War on Greed?"

15. I don’t understand the delusional logic
Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 03:45 PM by mariema
of the statement: Iraq Is Center Of War On Terror, for so many reasons: how do you make war on a concept; how does one determine a center of such a concept; how can you win such a war, etc.

But to me, the weirdest thing about this statement is: If Bush and his cabal REALLY believe this statement to be true they would have to be complete idiots to ever pull any of our troops out. Instead of saying “as the Iraqis stand up we will stand down” they would be trying to stay in Iraq. Because if Iraq IS the center of their GWOT, why are they so eager to turn the fight over to this fledgling Iraqi military?

That is like saying “ We have a heart that needs transporting so that it can be transplanted into a child to save the child’s life. It is urgent and necessary that we get it to the hospital safely and quickly. Here, let’s give it to this 13 year old kid who has read a driver’s manual and watched his father drive the family car.” (Silly analogy but the best I can think of at the moment.)

Does anyone else see the wackiness of this logic? Or am I delusional?

Bush lays out case for progress made in Iraq
'Strategy is working,' president says on three-year anniversary of war

Updated: 3:56 p.m. ET March 20, 2006
CLEVELAND - President Bush on Monday cited progress in stabilizing an insurgent stronghold in northern Iraq, saying he has “confidence in our strategy” and critics should look beyond the images of violence to see clear signs of progress.

Bush tried a new tactic to boost sagging support for the war, relating to his audience in Cleveland a lengthy story about a campaign to rid the northern city of Tal Afar of terrorism against civilians.

Success there “gives reason for hope for a free Iraq,” he said, adding that the “strategy is working.”

25. It’s a good thing, actually.
Since Bush's approval ratings are way down, and that Iraq
helped to get them there, yet another “positive” statement
about Iraq should help to keep his approval ratings down.

Bush says U.S. military will defend Israel from Iran

By DPA

U.S. President George W. Bush said Monday he would use military force to protect Israel from Iranian threats, but also restated his desire to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program diplomatically.

Bush, in a speech in Cleveland, Ohio, cited comments by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last year calling for Israel to be wiped off the map.

Iran's "stated objective" to destroy Israel is a "serious threat," Bush said as he marked three years since the start of the war in
Iraq.

"I made it clear - and I'll make it clear again - that we will use military might to protect our ally Israel," he said.

4. The US military used Kurdish and Shiite troops to attack the northern Turkmen city of Talafar in August. Kurdish troops, drawn from the Peshmerga militia, were allowed to paint lasers on targets in the city, which were then destroyed by the US air force. Entire neighborhoods were destroyed, and much of the population was displaced for some time. Shiite troops and local Shiite Turkmen informants were used to identify and interrogate alleged Sunni insurgents. Turkey was furious at the attack on ethnically related Turkmen and threatened to halt its cooperation with the US. Although the attack was allegedly undertaken to capture foreign forces allegedly based in the city, only 50 were announced apprehended. The entire operation ended up looking like a joint Kurdish-Shiite attack on Sunni Turkmen, backed by the US military. Turkmen and Kurds do not generally get along, and Turkmen accuse Kurds of wanting to ethnically clense them from Kirkuk. The entire operation was politically the worst possible public relations for the US in northern Iraq, and seems unlikely to have put a signficant dent in the guerrillas' capabilities.

40. Bush Asks U.S. to Look Past Iraq Bloodshed
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2006/03/20/national/w142257S47.DTL

Beginning the fourth year of an unpopular war, President Bush defended his Iraq record on Monday against skeptical questioning. He said he could "understand people being disheartened" but appealed to Americans to look beyond the bloodshed and see signs of progress.

...

As the president delivered the latest installment in an upbeat defense of his Iraq policy, opponents used the day after the third anniversary of the invasion to step up their criticism. Three potential 2008 presidential candidates — Democratic Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska — offered critical assessments at the International Association of Firefighters' legislative conference in Washington.

Biden said it was time for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld to "be told to go home" and for Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff "be given his walking papers." Richardson said U.S. involvement in Iraq had been "badly mismanaged by the administration."

Hagel, in an interview at the conference, said many of the predictions and promises made by the administration have fallen short, such as that oil revenues would pay for the war and the conflict would be short. He also pointed to Vice President Dick Cheney's assertion last May that the insurgency was in its "last throes." "There's been a credibility erosion for three years," Hagel said.
