Heavy Fire in Baghdad as U.S. Attacks Guerrillas

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. forces struck suspected guerrilla targets in Baghdad with mortars, artillery and gunships on Thursday on the second night of a crackdown against anti-American attackers in the Iraqi capital.

The sound of explosions and bursts of artillery fire echoed across the city and tracer fire lit up the night sky.

A military spokesman said U.S. forces attacked three sites across the city, including a building used by insurgents on Wednesday to attack on American soldiers with rockets.

The strikes were part of Operation Iron Hammer, an offensive against guerrillas whose attacks on U.S. forces in Baghdad have grown ever bolder in recent days. <snip>

5. Ooooh... I hope not...
If that's the case we won't be allowed to talk about it in "Breaking News"...

It'll be discussed in a forum buried three levels down, hidden in a sub-folder and then administered with ridiculous rules...

I hope you're wrong...

6. I had the same thought when I read that headline
People in the U.S. (most anyway) completely ignore the M.E. headlines of attacks and counter attacks in Israel.

They've gone on for so long and its so predictable and so intractable that people just blow it off.

Maybe that same attitude is helping Smirky in the polls (hell, he should be down to minus 10 approval). People say: "Oh another shooting, another bombing in the M.E.. Oh my, will that never end? Who's playing in the dome this weekend?"

Uh huh. Baghdad - sweet liberated baghdad - is a combat zone.

Bang up job, there, Bushie, you incompetent shitbird. Bitter enders, eh, Rummy, you half-drunk half-corpse, you undead parasite.

A big shit sandwich.

3. You know...
I'm noticing that explosions in Baghdad are getting a lot less interest than they used to. They've become normal.

4. is this where we start to really
have house to house guerilla warfare in Baghdad?

This is the stuff that nightmares are made of.

I cannot believe I am a citizen of a country gone so mad and blind - I weep for the loss of all that was once good about the US - now we have been reduced to killing monsters that can stomp anything and anyone with our lovely military boots.

Oh, yes, SH was a bad man -

killing his own people

deliberately keeping the gilding on his lily

depriving the BFEE of the oil that existed below the sands

but this is too much, too far and too wrong.

10. Can you imagine if Saddam had had an operation called

"Iron Hammer" and was carrying on full-scale war against the Iraqi population, I'll bet Bush and the 'bots would be screaming about how terrible this is. We do it...and it's OK?

Something very wrong with this country today....honestly, "Operation Iron Hammer" sounds too close to what the Nazi's were doing in Poland in WW2 or maybe even Stalin's pogroms.

Can we at least stop lying to ourselves that this occupation is to promote democracy in Iraq?

7. CNN just said we hit the former Republican Guard HQ...
...saying that the "insurgents" have been meeting there. If that's true (which it probably isn't), then the "insurgents" are dumber than I thought. If you're on the run, then you don't go back to your old meeting place...

8. Good MORNING VIETNAM
(I know the US Military is for once trying to get ahead
of the power curve, aka try to get this under control before
Ramadan is over)... or the get even will get bad, really bad

Now this is also, as far as the sheeple is concerned, reminizcent
of teh Tet offensive, so when you go out and talk to people
hammer on this...

Never mind the only similiarity between Tet and this is that both
occurred during a religious holiday...

11. They "say" they are attacking "guerrillas"
The truth is they don't KNOW who they are attacking as they don't really know who is attacking them. Meanwhile a country, 50% of whose population is under 16 YEARS OLD is being TERRORIZED BY AMERICANS. Love that "democracy."

12. US is not attacking anyone. They are bombing them from afar.
We don't do man to man combat.
