US targets "misinformation" on Iraq family deaths

BAGHDAD - The U.S. military hit back on Wednesday at what it called a "pattern of misinformation" following Iraqi police accusations that its troops shot dead a family of 11 in their home last week.

Responding to comments by police and residents in the town of Ishaqi, north of Baghdad, that U.S. officers had failed to attend a meeting on Wednesday about the incident, Lieutenant Colonel Barry Johnson, a senior spokesman, told Reuters:

"There was no meeting scheduled with any Coalition investigators today. There appears to be a distinct pattern of misinformation surrounding this entire incident.

"This is another clear sign of that happening, making allegations for the sake of prompting media reporting and attempting to discredit Coalition operations. This is a pattern we‘ve seen the terrorist-backed insurgency use repeatedly."

1. Oh, I get it. It's the terrorists' fault
that we shot those people and then blew up their house to cover up the crime.

That's all right, then.

8. This seems to bespeak a lack of trust
Between Lieutenant Colonel Barry Johnson, a senior U.S. military spokesman, and the Iraqi police.

Unfortunately, the fact that the lieutenant colonel denies that there was supposed to be a meeting and suggests that there is a disinformation campaign going on, but does NOT deny that the raid/shooting/bombing took place, is not encouraging. This DU thread contains a link to the official Iraq police report.

Iraqi police claim US troops shot civilians

Wed 22 Mar 2006

AN INVESTIGATION has begun into Iraqi police allegations that American soldiers shot dead a family of 11 in their home last week, the US military said yesterday.

Soldiers said they killed four people, including a militant.

The investigation began a day after a magazine published allegations that US marines killed 15 civilians in another town last year. A criminal inquiry into those deaths was launched last week.

Time magazine published accounts by townspeople, saying troops went on a rampage after a marine was killed by a roadside bomb in Haditha, west of Baghdad, in November.

The US military said yesterday that it was investigating the discrepancies between the accounts of the police and the US army of an incident in the town of Ishaqi, north of Baghdad, on Wednesday. Police accused US troops of shooting 11 people, including five children, while the army said only four people were killed in all.

"Because of that discrepancy, we have opened an investigation," said Lieutenant-Colonel Barry Johnson, a senior US military spokesman in Baghdad.

Just, so ever one is clear as to which massacre the US is claiming is marred by scurrulous rumours spoken by dead-enders.

15. "Discrepancy?" Discrepancy THIS!!!
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 09:06 PM by rocknation

...The US military says four civilians -- two women, a child, and a man -- were killed in the early hours of last Wednesday when troops, looking for an Al-Qaeda suspect, came under fire as they raided a house.

Iraqi police say 11 civilians were killed -- including five women and four children.

"There is an investigation directed by the commander of the multinational force into the discrepancy between the numbers and to determine the facts," US Lieutenant-Colonel Barry Johnson told AFP Wednesday...

That sure looks like heck of a lot more than four bodies to me! (link)

17. I noted that ...
Having failed miserably in convincing us that the problems in Iraq are caused by foreign "terrorists" and not wanting to admit it's an insurgency ... they're now floating "terrorist-backed insurgency".
Likely talking point of the day.
...O...

16. tip of the iceberg
"Local journalists filmed the bodies of five young children, four women and two men who police said were killed in the raid."

they can squirm all they like but this is only the tip of the iceberg. remember that SAS guy who quit because of what he saw US troops doing? there have been lots of similar reports, all summarily dismissed because the news source was arab. i also recall an independent filmmaker who was 'detained' and all his stuff stolen by the army too. wonder what he uncovered.
