Bush threat painted on Nittany Lion statue (Penn State Univ)
http://www.post-gazette.com/breaking/20031113lionp6.asp

The FBI and U.S. Secret Service were notified about an act of vandalism on the Penn State University campus that appeared to include a threat against President Bush.

University police received a call yesterday telling them about the vandalism. The words "Bush dies 12-10-03" and "Iraq" were found painted on the Nittany Lion shrine, a stone statue that depicts the university's mascot, university police supervisor Bill Moerschbacher said.

Acts of vandalism are rare at the shrine and usually are associated with football games.

2. I'd assume American in the middle of Repug country
which is central PA. Course Penn State probably has a lot of non-US students.

20. Significance of 12/10 -- UN Human Rights Day
I checked to see if I could find any significance to 12/10. Here's the anniversaries that turned up. (Could it be a Deadhead commemoration? ;-) )

Events
1817 - Mississippi becomes the 20th U.S. state.
1864 - William Tecumseh Sherman reaches Savannah, Georgia, ending his "March to the Sea".
1869 - Wyoming grants women the right to vote
1898 - A treaty is signed in Paris that officially ends the Spanish-American War.
1901 - First Nobel Prizes awarded
1906 - Theodore Roosevelt wins the Nobel Peace Prize
1941 - Japanese forces land in the Philippines, capture Guam and sink the British ships HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse
1948 - The UN General Assembly adopts the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
1953 - Dr. Albert Schweitzer is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
1965 - The Grateful Dead play their first concert, at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco.
1975 - Andrei Sakharov wins the Nobel Peace Prize. The prize is accepted by his wife, Yelena Bonner
1978 - Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat win the Nobel Peace Prize
1983 - Lech Walesa wins the Nobel Peace Prize. The prize is accepted by his wife, Danuta.
1984 - Desmond Tutu wins the Nobel Peace Prize
1986 - Elie Wiesel wins the Nobel Peace Prize

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_10

The only thing of remotely possible significance that kicks up is that it is UN Human Rights Day.

7. It was probably a pissed off college student
If those students actually registered to vote, and then voted -- They could kick ass in all the elections. I live 9 miles from Penn State, and the students have never really made a large dent in any elections.

8. None too bright, I have to say.
Bush, being perceived as an elected official, can actually be considered a target for assasination as if he were a head of state.

17. That was my thought, too.
Whoever pulled that stunt can expect a visit from the Men In Black, no doubt.

Killing is wrong, and also really stupid. It tends to create martyrs when a public figure is killed. Also, after observing Former Justice Moore on television today, you can be a martyr on the cheap by "taking one for the team".

*sigh*

Junior, Dick, and the MIB have done such a swell job finding Osama and Saddam, so now they can be expected to find a tagger at Penn State ?

OK.

22. It's visible and easily accessible
Plus whoever did this knew it would make the newswires much more readily than if he(I assume) were to have painted it on a building.

And Welcome Momof1! It's good to see someone on the board from the Penn State area. I was beginning to give up hope.

24. You may be right
Joe Paterno is a noted Repub who spoke in past Republican National Conventions. It could be done partly to hack him off.

Whatever reason for it being done it doesn't discount the fact that it is a stupid move on the perpitrators part. He/she could well get a visit and a pocket full of trouble.

I'd much rather see the emporer thrown out of office by vote.

31. As I said, I was class of '87.
I got my B.S. in '87.

My M.S. in '90.

My wife got her B.A. in '85. I met her when I was a freshman.

My brother got his B.A. in '94 and M.A. in '96.

In other words, my family basically bleeds blue and white. Tell your son to cherish every day of his Penn State experience. It's truly one of the great places on earth (in my humble opinion).

32. blue-and-white blood here, too
And you're right about it being a wonderful place.

As for the lion ... other teams paint the friggin' lion all the time. They always have to have student guards around it at homecoming, when we're playing Syracuse (they used to paint it orange), etc. etc. Someone broke the ear off once.

Could be a pissed-off football fan. The team is a mess, Joe Paterno won't retire. And Paterno is pretty far up the Bush Family's ass (he gave speeches for Poppy during one of his prexy campaigns).

My personal theory: Hey, it's Penn State fer cryin' out loud. PROBABLY A DRUNK DID IT!

And Dec. 10 is Kenneth Branagh's birthday!
