Mississippi Lawmakers Mulling Abortion (in negotiations)
Edited on Thu Mar-23-06 08:31 AM by Maddy McCall

LAWMAKERS MULLING ABORTION

Legislative negotiations on an abortion ban began Monday.

Roughly 40 people from both sides of the abortion debate sat quietly as Senate Public Health and Welfare Chairman Alan Nunnelee, R-Tupelo, (who proposed the bill outlawing abortion} outlined his requests for the bill that included prohibiting the morning-after pill.

Representatives said little as they listened. The committee likely will meet again today.

"We're going to take a kind of methodical approach to this," said House Public Health and Human Services Chairman Steve Holland, D-Plantersville. "I'm in no hurry on this issue at all."

Senate Bill 2922 bans abortion except in cases of rape, incest and a threat to the woman's health.

Lawmakers have until Monday to reach a compromise. The session ends on April 2.

3. I just sent off five emails.
Going to make calls later today. See my post in GD right now with email addresses of the good guys and ladies on our side who are holding the fort down. Those legislators need to hear from us...please consider emailing them today.

It's the damned twits here who give us such a bad name. There are good guys, and they need to hear from us.

2. If they view abortion as murder, why the exception for rape and incest?
Unless, of course, the real motive is to punish women for promiscuity.:grr:

5. Cheryl Hourguettes can kiss my ass. If she wants absolution
for any shame she feels she can take it up with someone that's in the busine$$ of forgivene$$.

Her shame is her problem. She chose to adopt a value system that calls her a murderer.

Her weak-minded ass needs to stop projecting her shame onto other women in an attempt to feel better about herself.

And I don't have kind words for the state government of Mississippi either.

7. For every Cheryl there are 100 Mississippi women who would say that...
the only thing they felt after abortion was RELIEF.

But in Mississippi, you'd better be careful of what you say. You know?

So many women I talk to are PISSED about this bill.

8. I know. I just truly despise those who want to impose their guilt
on other women and then rob those other women of control of their bodies and their right to self-determination.

Hourguettes exerted her right to self-determination - now she wants to deny others. I fume.

9. Yes, it's bullshit. The right has found a woman who'll say what....
they want her to say, so they glorify her, and she eats up the attention from them.

She's used by them, because they think of her as filth, but she's an effective political tool.

I wish Cheryl weren't so stupid.

10. Too true! She is being used
She's the "fallen woman who is properly ashamed"

Held up as example but still scorned by those using her

I spoke in anger earlier - but she's a victim as well. I know that.

11. EXACTLY.
You said it so much more eloquently.

Yes, she has a place in society, albeit beneath the women in the organization for which she's "the star," and she earned that place by admitting that she's a promiscuous slut with a guilt complex.

I hate the bitches that use women like Cheryl. I really do.

6. Damn...sometimes I'm so ASHAMED of my state!
Just when you'd think everyone would be concentrating on what's important, such as (duh!) trying to recover from Hurricane Katrina and prepare for the predicted bad hurricane season ahead, Mississippi's legislature spends its time trying to restrict women's rights (further restrict, I should have said). And our noble governor? He staunchly and unflinchingly defends the rights of tobacco companies and vetoes legislation that would have provided a (modest) cut in sales taxex on food. If I lived in another state, and someone should ask me for a contribution to help suffering Mississippians, I'd laugh at them. Maybe people who elects fools like these don't DESERVE any help. End of rant. :grr: :grr: :nuke:

13. Got any reservations in Mississippi?
Edited on Thu Mar-23-06 02:14 PM by davsand
Sounds like you may be going the way of South Dakota. If so, the local reservations could follow in the footsteps of The President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation and build a Planned Parenthood.

There is a discussion about this in GD:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=725845&mesg_id=725845

When access to legal abortion is restricted women DIE. Ms Fire Thunder gets it, I hope others will follow suit.
