Wisconsin's Feingold Wins Support On "The Daily Show"

Senator Russ Feingold's call for censuring President Bush hasn't won much support in Congress ... but he won a backer Wednesday night in Jon Stewart, host of cable television's "The Daily Show."

The Wisconsin Democrat appeared on the Comedy Central show ... and Stewart told him he likes the censure idea because -- quote -- "This feels like some attempt at accountability."

He added that he hopes some of Feingold's colleagues still let him eat at the lunch table.

Stewart is a liberal who nonetheless skewers both Democrats and Republicans, and he's popular among younger viewers. Feingold's appearance could help him broaden his appeal for a potential 2008 presidential campaign.

On the show, Feingold restates his position that Congress makes the laws and the president signs and enforces them but can't just make them up.

By which I mean that I love it. How it would play politically, I have no idea.

15. I love it tooand it would win handily. But then so did Kerry-Edwards.
According to the exit polls, which are much more accurate indicators of how the vote went than Diebold etc., Kerry won by about 5M votes nationwide and won OH easily.

20. Yeah, sigh, that's another issue
It could be that no ticket will win officially, no matter how great it is and how many votes it actually gets. But if the bad guys do control the voting process that thoroughly, then we might as well give up.

13. Not to be rude, but what has Clark done lately?
I see a lot of people carrying the torch for Wes Clark, but I honestly have no idea why. He didn't make that big an impression on me back in 2003/2004 and he's dropped off my radar completely since then. I'm not being sarcastic, but I need to hear more than "Clark's the one">

2. I love how the fact that Congress makes laws...
and the president enforces them is referred to in the story as "Feingold's position."

No, that's not his position, you douchebag. That's a fact. You know, one of those things that journalists are supposed to deal in but that, these days, apparently have a hard time recognizing.

11. Now THAT's the ticket!
And I know this is a Feingold thread, but I just have to say something about my boy Jon at the Academy Awards...

His torching of the Hollywood establishment (to paraphrase: "these are the people the downloading pirates are taking money from!"; "some people say Hollywood is out of touch, morally decadent, etc") was not only right on target, but par for the course for Stewart. It's not that he only goes after conservatives / Republicans (just frequently, and greatly deserved) - he goes after those in power who are far too comfortable with their positions. IMHO - the lack of laughter in the theater during those moments just showed that some on the left can dish it out, but they can't take it.

Bottom line, if you can't laugh at yourself, who CAN you laugh at?

18. Good choice!
Although Keith seems to enjoy doing it himself. But as Leader of the Free World, he'll be busy and he'll just have to learn to delegate.

14. Russ was great
He looked a bit overpackaged to me - but think about the size of the audience that got to see Feingold state his censure resolution and the thinking behind it. A lot of young people are dissapointed in the Bush administration, to say the least. This could plant the seed of censure in some of those people's heads, and others.

19. They always say Stewart draws "younger viewers"
I'm sure he does. But I know liberal people from their 20's into their 60's and hear the most enthusiasm for him among older viewers.
I don't think it's about age...I think those who care about politics today know it helps to laugh...you might still go crazy but not so insane.

I prescribe the show for those who get torn up about politics. The truth is horrible but laughter helps you keep your balance and have strength to fight on.

Russ was great. I applauded right along at the end.
