In Bolivia, world's highest ski resort melting away
In Bolivia, world's highest ski resort melting away

By Helen Popper
CHACALTAYA, Bolivia (Reuters) - Times are hard for the world's highest ski resort, a dizzy 17,388 feet (5,300 metres) above sea level in the Bolivian Andes. Its glacier is melting so fast synthetic snow is seen as the only way to save it.

Scientists say Chacaltaya's diminished piste could disappear altogether within five years due to climate change and, though this humble ski center is no Whistler or Chamonix, it is the only one the poor South American country has got.

"This has been the worst year we've had. It's quite sad to see," said Samuel Mendoza of the Bolivian Andean Club. "We want to bring in artificial snow so we can keep on skiing, so the sport does not die in Bolivia."

In the shady spots around the stone ski lodge, little patches of white survive while icicles drip steadily from the rafters. In the distance below, metal roofs in the sprawling slum city of El Alto glimmer under the fierce Andean sun.

2. The Weather Makers! A must read....
The Weather Makers

The History & Future Impact of Climate Change

by Tim Flannery
Most of us suspect that climate change is happening, but is it a terrible threat to our world or an exaggerated beat up? Or is it something in between - an issue that humanity must eventually face, but not yet?

In this groundbreaking and essential new book, Tim Flannery argues passionately for the urgent need to address - NOW - the implications of a global climate change that is damaging all life on earth and endangering our very survival.

This book is unimpeachable in its authority, deftly and accessibly written in its vision for what each of us can do to avoid catastrophe. It is a global call to arms, laying out plainly if not controversially what we know, what we think might happen, and what tools we have available to us to make a difference. The Weather Makers will change your life.

It is a difficult subject and hard for people to evaluate dispassionately because it entails deep political and industrial implications, and because it arises from the very core processes of our civilisation's success. Right now our fate is in our hands, for we are the weather makers, and we already possess the tools required to avoid catastrophic climate change.

3. But realistically world leadership is not under our control
We can say fate's in our hands all we want but, that's only correct in the most abstract of senses. Even if I go around buying everything I hear about global warming - and I mean even the most extreme tales - I have such doubts that we can do anything about it within a reasonable time frame that I see little choice but to hope that nature is more self-regulating than we are giving it credit for. Besides, Russia just had a miserably cold winter right? Warming doesn't have to be even or consistent. It just seems that even if it would be nice if humanity cleaned up its act, it won't be enough anyway.

Besides, some climate change occurs with frequency. It's known as weather. Attempts to treat it as a monolith are pretty much doomed, a result of trying to pigeonhole nature into a mental construct.

4. You'd think Reuters could hire an educated editor.

Did this "Helen Bopper" even graduate from grade school? Or was this due to the blue pencil of an uneducated editor?
