As part of the director general's plan to cut or outsource up to 6,000 BBC jobs to save £355m annually by 2008, 1,045 posts are due to go by the end of the corporation's current financial year at the end of this month.
In the 12 months to the end of March 2007, the BBC has targeted 1,920 posts for closure, which could lead to further confrontation between management and the broadcasting unions over compulsory redundancies.
Last year the BBC was hit by a 24-hour strike in May over job cuts and the unions threatened further industrial action before Mr Thompson offered concessions including a year-long moratorium on compulsory redundancies.
Broadcasting unions Bectu, Amicus and the National Union of Journalists have maintained their opposition to any compulsory redundancies.
