Rice Makes Case For Christian In Afghan Death Trial
Afghan Man Faces Possible Execution For Abandoning Islam

WASHINGTON -- Senior Muslim clerics demanded Thursday that an Afghan man on trial for converting from Islam to Christianity be executed, warning that if the government caves in to Western pressure and frees him, they will incite people to "pull him into pieces."

In an unusual move, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice telephoned President Hamid Karzai on Thursday seeking a "favorable resolution" of the case of Abdul Rahman. The 41-year-old former medical aid worker faces the death penalty under Afghanistan's Islamic laws for becoming a Christian.

...

Rice spokesman Sean McCormack said she told Karzai it is important for the Afghan people to know that freedom of religion is observed in their country. But in deference to the country's sovereignty, Rice evidently did not demand specifically that the trial be halted and the defendant released.

"This is clearly an Afghan decision," McCormack said. "They are a sovereign country."

1. So much for bringing democracy to a country
This is what happens when the preachers get in power-they manipulate their scriptures to suit their own needs-they sure don't follow the teachings from their prophets, any more than Buscho follow the teachings of the Constitution when they bring "democracy" to other countries.

"We vow to help ensure security and peace and take part in reconstruction of our
country," he said. Among those, who have taken up the offer, were former Taliban
Foreign Minister Wakil Ahmad Muttawakil and Taliban regime's Ambassador to
Pakistan Abdul Salam Zaeef.

The men travelled from various provinces from across Afghanistan to Kabul for a
ceremony at which their surrender was announced by the head of the government's
reconciliation commission Sebghattullah Mujaddadi.

4. Democracy without a Bill of Rights is not worth living in...
It's just mob rule.

The Muslim nations will show the world how insane they are via Bush's "democracy" movement.

How does someone become an ex-terrorist?

How does someone become an ex-Taliban?

State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said....

ERELI: Well, I guess -- all I can tell you about that is
that at the time he applied, for the purposes for which he wished the

United -- to come to the United States, and based on a review of his
activity in the past, it was determined that there was no basis for
ineligibility.

Put in simple English, I think what you can conclude from that is
-- well, if -- I don't know that if -- if he was indeed a member of
the Taliban, being a member of the Taliban, in and of itself, is not
-- was not necessarily and is not -- was not necessarily at the time,
given what he was doing and what -- he wanted to come to the United
States, a grounds for ineligibility.

Put in simple English?

They all had tea together.

6. Now all of a sudden sovereignty
is more important then human rights? Sovereignty didn't seem to matter that much to Condi when we invaded Iraq.

9. Yeah, what is this sudden respect for a nation's sovereignty?
Where does it come from, and why doesn't it apply universally?

Something tells me there's more going on than we see on the surface (again). It's staggering to think that the Bush administration is going to let Rahman be executed for being a Christian. And the Democrats ought to make a few statements (dog whistle politics style) that signal the fundy base of the GOP that the Republicans are more interested in serving mammon than God. If the fundies get disgusted and disenchanted with the GOP, they might just stay home come November. And that would spell real trouble for the GOP, Diebold or not.
