Top French oil executives jailed
Top French oil executives jailed
Wednesday 12 November 2003

Three top former executives of French oil giant Elf have been sentenced to jail and ordered to pay huge fines in the biggest corporate graft scandal in French history.

After a marathon inquiry and trial peppered with tales of sleaze, political graft and high living, the Paris Criminal Court sentenced ex- Elf chairman Loik Le Floch-Prigent and his deputy Alfred Sirven to five years jail each.

The court also fined the disgraced ex-Elf boss 375,000 euros ($435,700) and Sirven one million euros as he started into a long list of convictions concerning 37 people on trial in all.

Judge Michel Desplan told Le Floch- Prigent that he was "the source of most of the misappropriations...which you carried out to enrich yourself personally".

2. In Europe
executives go to jail when their companies are negligent as well. Several Italians got sent to jail for dioxin scandel in the 80's.

In the U$ it would be unAmurikan to send the Rich to jail, jail is only for the poor and middle-class.

4. Oil GIANT "Elf" ???
Stupid Frenchmen. Elves are little, unless you're J.R.R. Tolkien.

Seriously, though, first the Russians and now the French have gone after big oil executives all of a sudden. Sometimes it seems to me that we're seeing ripples on the surface of some deep secret game that's going on underneath, and that Russia and France have just made a couple of key moves after sitting back and letting the Yankees overextend themselves. But that may just be the Foster's talking.

6. I Noticed That
There is a lot we're unaware of. I'm wondering if Putin had the meetings between the oil execs there and Poppy monitored. Remember that Poppy quit Carlyle soon after and the Russian exec is jailed without bail.

7. Hardy all of a sudden
The investigation leading up to this trial has gone on for years. And this trial has been preceded by others targetting key figures in this case. You're just noticing "all of a sudden."

But do an internet search for "Roland Dumas" shoes statuettes, "Christine Deviers Joncour" mistress Taiwan, and "Alfred Sirven" Philippines. Quite a saga!

5. Where is Perle's outrage?
Come on now. When Russia decides to jail some crooks that goplundering the national wealth, this is called "return to stalinist regime" and "hideous KGB powergame" while "those russian bastards prepare to reinstate the Soviet Union".
Where is the genuine outrage of zionists about the French oligarchs being jailed?

Is US going to exclude France from G8 too?
