Eliot Spitzer backs marriage equality drive

Eliot Spitzer, New York state attorney general and front-runner for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, along with Comptroller Alan G. Hevesi and 44 other elected officials from across the state, are speaking out in favor of marriage equality as part of a public education campaign put together by the Empire State Pride Agenda.

Called "New Yorkers for the Freedom to Marry," the initiative was launched Valentine's Day with statements from more than 70 clerics. The next phase will include labor and business leaders statewide speaking in support of marriage.

Although Spitzer has spoken in favor of marriage equality for more than two years, as attorney general he is fighting a suit aimed at legalizing gay marriage in New York. That case will hit the Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, in May.

Joe Tarver, spokesman for the Pride Agenda, said Spitzer's involvement in the campaign does not represent a conflict of interest.

He needs to resolve this cognitive dissonance.

but at least the Dems will come out on the right side of the issue in time for their election.

I believe they also have the right to refuse to prosecute a case in the name of civil rights.
