Gephardt Downplays Dean's Labor Coup
"....On Wednesday, Dean scored a political coup when the presidents of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the Service Employees International Union issued a joint statement endorsing him.

AFSCME's endorsement was particularly tough for Gephardt, who skipped a nationally televised debate last week to meet with AFSCME leaders in Iowa....

...Gephardt downplayed Dean's coup Thursday.

"I never expected to get all the labor unions," Gephardt said. "I've got 20, he's got three. That's a pretty good lead. That would even win a football game."

1. Actually At Least 5, Dick
SEIU
AFSCME
IUPAT
California Teachers Association
Vermont Teachers Association

And Gephardt certainly wasn't downplaying SEIU and AFSCME's endorsements when he was talking to their leadership (as reported in the Washington Post). Quite the opposite.

3. I think Dean getting those unions was good
Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 12:00 AM by JohnKleeb
but you cant forget Gephardt is good with them. Personally while personally being disappointed with Gep as of late, I still like him for his economic views which keeps him fairly high for me.
