Thousands gather for protest - Denver immigration

DENVER - Thousands of people gathered at Civic Center Park Saturday to protest federal legislation that would criminalize undocumented immigrants.

The rally started at 10:00a.m. in downtown Denver. Police estimate about 30-50 thousand people jammed the streets causing road closures.

But U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., said the crowd would have been much smaller or could have been quickly dispersed had Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers shown up with buses and started checking identification.

“When the rest of America looks at these demonstrations they'll agree it's getting more difficult to control illegal immigration,” Tancrado said. “We'd better do something about this.”

And those are the news estimates - usually they are pathetically low. Sounds like a great turnout.

Just got in from Mississippi yesterday, didn't know this was going on or I would have gone and taken photos. The news video was amazing--I've been to really big rallies in Denver, but this protest dwarfed all of them. The ABC afflilate said 50,000 people.

What does it mean?

No arrests, more than 50,000 people. That's unheard of. Way to go! Lots of people carrying US flags, We Are Not Criminals signs, very inspiring. Hope it makes some difference. We have so many kids who should go to college, but can't because they would have to pay out of state tuition. So they're good enough to pay taxes, but not good enough to admit to our schools.

and why haven't we heard about it for the last couple of weeks? Doesn't anyone find this strange?

The government is taking away our constitutional rights, spying on citizens, selling off our national assets, running trillions of dollars in debt, cutting funding for the poor, killing US soldiers and Iraqis, looting the treasury through corruption, and Americans decide to protest immigration laws?

Something is not right about this. I wonder if some of the corporations that are making big bucks off the backs of the illegals are organizing this? I would like to think this is the straw that broke the camel's back but I think there is something else going on.

And if white liberals don't know about them, then that's too bad, because they are important potential allies. The REAL basis for change in this country lies with people of color.

Well said. The Latino community is indeed organized, they have to be: they're easy targets for anyone looking for a convenient scapegoat for their problems. I don't know for sure, but I'd be surprised if National Council of La Raza hadn't played a significant role in organizing these protests.

Oh wait, that's only for us anti-war socialists.

I'll bet they were surprised that they didn't have to make any arrests.
