SOLDIERS drafted into the Russian army are widely deprived of adequate health care and sufficient food - including meat or green vegetables - during their first year.
According a statement from the New York-based Human Rights Watch group, provisions fall short of the Russian military's own nutritional standard for soldiers, and the food they do receive is often rotten or infested with insects.
The hazing for which the Russian military is widely criticised also results in senior conscripts commandeering young conscripts' food, Human Rights Watch said in a report to be published tomorrow.
"The average Russian soldier is sick and hungry," said Rachel Denber, acting executive director of the Europe and Central Asia division of Human Rights Watch.
"Yet the Russian government fails to even acknowledge the problem, let alone address it."
